Jedi Academy for Mac OS X re-released

3bR2NvM.png

Now on Steam and in the App Store

Aspyr, the company that ported Jedi Academy to OS X, has re-released it. Previously, playing Jedi Academy on OS X was notoriously difficult: though it worked on older versions of Apple's operating system, newer versions like Mountain Lion required various workarounds, and sometimes did not work at all.

The new version of Jedi Academy for OS X, available through Steam and the App Store, should work with the latest version of the operating system without those issues.

Thanks to Redsaurus and @Circa for the tip. :)

Update: Apparently, there are still some issues with this re-release. If you do not have all files the server you are connecting to has (which is often the case), you will receive an error, and be unable to play on that server. Hopefully, Aspyr will fix that soon.

Update: Due to the issues with this re-release, I highly recommend not using this version yet, until they're resolved.

So how come the Mac requirements are SO higher than the Windows ones?

Why do you need a dual core CPU, EIGHT times more RAM and SIX times more VRAM?

Downloaded it today via Steam, the multiplayer currently has some issues, hope they will fix it

Well I haven't seen the requirements, but the performance is same with the older release. One thing to note is that you can now play in widescreen resolution without having to edit jampconfig.

@@Doby What kind of issues have you ran into?

I've heard some mods have difficulty running on this? e.g. JA+

This. When attempting to connect to a server, it tells you that you are missing files and to turn on downloads. Then when you do that, it tells you this server doesn't allow downloads and to turn it off. Happened on Lugormod and JA+ servers and well those are the only 2 I play  :(

That's interesting... Perhaps they threw in some more neat features?

I hope to follow this closely... thanks to Redsaurus I have the game working now, and it runs pretty well, my one gripe being that fxFiles have their colours reversed, so that I have yellow plasma, orange trip mine beams, and lots of purple effects that should be yellow... and my whole screen flashes red when someone fires a rocket.  Difference isn't too noticeable without weapons, except for flames and jetpacks, which are a bit magenta.  But I'll be really happy if everything is fixed soon, and I can just buy a new copy!

Aspyr have apparently decided that missing files from a server should be an error not a warning, despite it being a warning in all earlier versions of JA :|  If you have all of the pk3s from a server you should still be able to join it.

Mods seem to work fine in the Steam version. You should probably install MP mods at /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Jedi Academy/ (previously they could be installed at /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Jedi Academy MP/). Note Library is a hidden folder in Lion and later.

For Steam game is at /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Jedi Academy/Jedi Knight Jedi Academy.app. If you want to launch straight into MP, you can find the MP application by right clicking on the Jedi Knight Jedi Academy application and doing "Show Package Contents". Under Contents you can find the Jedi Academy MP application.

You can probably also install mods inside the Contents folder, since that is where the original base files are.

Note that if you want to launch mods directly for the Steam version, you can use still use my JA launcher. When you first start Steam Jedi Academy MP up directly it may have strange colours, but it's nothing an /r_mode <number> and /vid_restart won't fix.

Mods for the App Store version can be installed either inside the game application (which will just be in your Applications folder) like with the Steam game or at /Users/yourname/Library/Containers/com.aspyr.jediacademy.appstore/Data/Library/Application Support/Jedi Academy/

Currently there seems to be no way to launch mods directly with the App Store version.

Unfortunately, while Aspyr did make some new r_modes, r_mode -1 has been removed completely. If you attempt to open the game with r_mode -1 the game will crash.

Yep, had some issues with MP. I don't have much experience with MP so I'm not sure what all is up. I couldn't create my own game, it crashed every time.

I got the App Store version. I have JO that I got from the app store and simple mods worked by just putting them in the base folder, which is fine for me. I'm a baseJA player, not a fan of JA+ and all that jazz.

I also sent Aspyr a message. They're pretty good with replying. I messaged them a couple times before about when they would release JA again and other things and they replied within a couple days.

God I'm glad I don't own nor probably ever will own a Mac, I'll leave it for the trendy hipsters with their thick rimmed glasses and slicked to the side hair styles.

Perhaps it recognizes server-side pk3s as shared pk3s and wants you to download them?

Look up the original T2 Lugormod pk3. It mainly modifies contents of ext_data, but also has scripts, shaders, strings and ui folders.

I'd hope that the App Store version works the same regarding mods, but the main game application will be much easier to find if you got it that way.

I think r_modes are in the uix86.dll. Perhaps replacing new uix86 with old one would bring the custom resolutions back?

Those cvars are used in the engine, not UI

Yesterday I sent Aspyr a mail regarding the issue with connecting to servers. I quote their response;

Go to Setup>Game Options> and set Allow Downloads to Yes. When you find a server you wish to join. Select Server Info and it will show all of the server options. Scroll down until you see Downloads or Allow Downloads. If it is set to 0 you will not be able to join the game. If it is set to 1, you will be able to join the game.

yeah, I got that response too, I replied to them asking if they were going to fix it as most servers don't have allow downloads...

For a lot of Mac users, this is the only version they can play, which is the point of the release. The only other way Lion or Mountain Lion users could have played it before was in a virtual OS of Windows, which was laggy at times and inconvenient.

I'm sure they will fix the MP soon. It's not a big deal to me since I don't play MP. Would be nice to have working though.
