Caelum & JKHub partner on Patreon

gnCRkat.png

Wtf, it's Caelum

So. Hi. You might remember me. I'm Caelum. These days, I mostly run around everywhere obnoxiously advertising my JKA.io server hosting business. In the past, I created JKHub. I'm retired now, but I still occasionally do some JKHub work behind the screens.

Recently, I've been working on expanding my hosting business to other games. That's going extremely well, and I'm very happy with how that's working out. At the same time though, I'd like to be more involved with the JKA community. There are a few things I've always wanted to do but been unable to do, like offering free JKA servers to the entire community. Frankly, I'd also like to breathe some new life into JKHub and the community at large.

Unfortunately, I eat, sleep, and work, and as such only have limited time. JKHub's staff and I have come up with an experiment that allows me to do both.

The Patreon madness

You know Patreon, right? That site that lets you give a monthly amount of money to creators, artists, and so forth? In cooperation with JKHub's staff, I've set up a Patreon page allowing people to give me monthly money. It's an experiment - there's no harm at all if it doesn't work out, and I'll go back to my hosting business - but it's one I'm very much devoted to if there is enough interest.

What if people donate and this works?

Here are some of the things that will happen if people are interested:

ACHIEVED: At $99/month

I will un-retire and return as JKHub staff member. I'll actually dedicate quite some time to it. JKHub will see a lot more news articles, improvements, and activity. I'll be holding lots of polls to see what people are interested in and what I should start with.

At $199/month

The JKHub 2.0 overhaul will begin immediately, instead of waiting longer. It will be the biggest face lift in the history of JKHub, featuring a clean, modern redesign based off constant feedback from the community. It won't be one of those crappy corporate redesigns that suck - it'll be awesome.

At $299/month

JKHub will never need donations again. I will pay for JKHub costs out of my own pocket (through these Patreon donations). Also, we'll create a cool custom server tracker that's infinitely better than Gametracker and Jeditracker.

At $499/month

I will offer unlimited free JKA & JKO servers to the community. Seriously. No strings attached. You ask, you get a free JKA/JKO server. Any mod, no restrictions. Nobody will ever need to pay for a JKA/JKO server again. I'd really like to hit this goal.

At $699/month

JKHub will expand into other games and become like the old FileFront network sites, or Nexus Mods, only community managed, ad-free, and more future proof. The strong focus on JKA and JKHub will always remain, but we'll start providing the same thing for many other games, and I'll work on it full-time. I'm really not expecting to hit this goal, but I won't complain if we do!

What if people aren't interested and don't donate?

None of the above will happen and I'll go back to working on my upcoming hosting business. Really, that's it. This isn't something I'm desperately begging to happen, but I'd regret not giving it a try and seeing how interested the JKA community is in this. On a personal level, it's actually quite scary trying this out and seeing what the reception will be like. I think some of these goals - like the free servers - would be amazingly cool if at all possible.

Where can I donate or learn more?

First! Hope this pans out.

Looks like the amount displayed is after fees, so we'll actually need a tad more than that.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Someone to work on JKHub full time would be nice, although challenging. I think if anyone can succeed where I seemingly have failed, it's Caelum.

The creator returns.  :woot:

So far, we've had 1 patron (a JKHub staff member) and nobody else has come forward.

On the bright side I haven't been called a Nazi for trying this out and seeing how people respond yet either.

Should we conclude there's very little interest in this? I'll leave the Patreon page up for at least another week, but I feel this is a very slow start, so if anyone beyond mrwonko is interested in this, I'd urge them not to wait for other people to donate instead.

It's only been like a day, it may be a while before people get paid... or see this.

You don't pay immediately, it's a monthly subscription with the first payment going out on October 1st - as such I'd leave it open throughout the month before cancelling it.

At $699/month you should basically start purchasing licenses and begin creating a new game like JK4, frien'..... and not only managing few other websites that in the end belong to you. What kind of deal is that?

EA owns exclusive rights to Star Wars games and will sue into oblivion anyone else making a Star Wars game.

Also, keep in mind this wouldn't mean Caelum makes $699/month extra; it would mean This is now Caelum's job and his income from which he pays rent and buys food and such is $699/month

That said it's really an improbable stretch goal; what I'm actually hoping to hit is the $499/month goal where I can start offering unlimited free servers and the community never needs to pay for a JKA/JKO server again (plus some other perks like faster JKH 2.0 overhaul and JKHub never needing donations again)

It costs a hell of a lot more than that to make games and acquire licenses :P maybe add a couple of zeroes

Any server that says jka.io in the server name is a server that just got set up and hasn't been configured by its owner yet. I host 30 online JKA servers in total right now. Just counted.  :P

Oh? Some addresses please?

EFF, JAWA, JD, DN, SR & jkaff are all popular ones afaik. Find their IPs here. I can publish a full list of IP addresses I own if you really care?

Well then it looks like you need another 20 more servers to cover that $499... though if you offered free servers there opens another can o' worms, what separates normal people requesting for them and those who pay monthly?

Nuhh, I'm just thinking too much. excuse me, just going back to the beer....

Potentially, three to four more zeroes ;)

Nothing. All my paying customers would be converted to free customers as well. I'd continue to host commercial servers for other games (unless the $699 goal were hit), websites, etc, but the JKA servers would all be free.

Basically right now I get about $390/month worth of income purely from JKA servers (gross, not net). There's still growing demand, so I think that A) that amount will continue to increase with time for now anyway, and B) if I offered it for free, there'd be a lot more demand (and thus, need for better server specs, etc). At $499 I'm confident I'm not losing out on a huge amount of money by offering it for free (remember: this is my job and how I pay rent and afford food), so if I'm getting that amount of money monthly from another JKA-y source than people paying me per JKA server, I'd be totally comfortable making all the JKA servers (for both existing and future customers) free.

Hnnngg let's see what other server owners say. I'm not looking for incentives but others might.

I'm running 7 servers at USD$XX a month, don't have an issue giving you that coin but reliability is always on top of my mind. Some host who'll stick around for five years, a decade even. Of course, looking for assurance on the Internet is foolish...

Anyway, a week is a bit short I think, considering this is an old game and many don't drop by here often...

About those zero to the costs you like so much to add. Its 699/month/person am I right? So if you got, let's say then people then you have it. 6990$/month. Of course you do have your own income as well right? Still not enough to buy a license?

EA holds them? I thought EA only borrows (sorry don't know a better english phrase for that) from Disney? EA is licensee, Disney is licensor. That doesn't mean they can't give a license to another subject? I remember long time ago a Star Trek license was granted to 2 companies: Interplay and Activision. That worked out well. Its just Interplay was limited to produce TOS era games, and Activision the TNG era games, so it was kind of a compromise.

Secondly I don't fancy an idea that modders who do they work for free, they sacrifice their own free time, buy expensive softwares (like modelling or painting programs) and yet they need to pay for a place to share their work? But that's only my opinion. I already weared my flame suit :)

He's not asking for $699 a month PER PERSON xD

He's saying if the total was that per month then he could afford to both provide a free service (the server hosting) and offer full-time technical support for said services.

EA signed exclusive rights deal with Disney though so nobody else can unless you become a developer as a subsidiary of EA I think.

Maybe more people would be interested if supporters would get something personally in return, depending on how much money they are giving. If you check other patreon pages, that's pretty much standard. The goals are probably kinda abstract for most people and will leave them with the feeling that they are either giving away their money for nothing (if none of the goals will be reached) or at least give money for something that they don't benefit personally from.
