MUG
Just got a virus, so I figured it's about time I got rid of AVG >.> Can anyone recommend a a half decent free antivirus that wont spam my screen with adverts, and wont require me to run a separate firewall etc? Mainly, I just want it to sit there, and shut up, which is why I've been using AVG up till now, but it fianlly seems to be becoming ineffective, as I had been warned. Link to comment
Fighter
Microsoft Security Essentials - sits there, scans, updates, no pop ups, nothing, is effective. Avira if you disable the adverts. CaptainChar, Sentra and KDR_3XILE like this Link to comment
MUG
Avira if you disable the adverts.Isn't Avira the one that doesn't even have a firewall? Link to comment
Fighter
Oh. Just noticed "won't require me to run a separate firewall". I just use the Windows Firewall and I'm fine. I don't have any suggestions in that case for an AV with a firewall, as I haven't really used of those types of AVs in a while. Link to comment
afi
I like Avast... using it since 2006 or so Link to comment
MUG
Why not a seperate firewall?Because hassle. And why not just Windows' built-in one?You want me to relay on a part of vista to keep my pc secure? funny story. Link to comment

MUG
I don't think you'll be able to find any antivirus that:Has high detection ratesHas little performance impactHas a built-in third-party antivirusIs freewell to date I have had a grand total of 1 virus in the past 5+ years using AVG, which is free and, I'm told, awful. So what is a better free antivirus? If so it must be pretty damn good =P I'm not after something top of the range, I'd just like to know if there is anything out there worth upgrading to. MUG
Avira. Avast is better than AVG as well (source). Neither offers a firewall, however, and I'm fairly sure no other free antivir does bundle one in.If I went with one of these, what firewall can you offer me? I seem to recall the thing you linked me before filled my PC with bloatware and adverts. Link to comment
MUG
Personally, I use - and love - Comodo Firewall. It's quite good.that would be the one i was reffering to xD Link to comment
eezstreet
You want me to relay on a part of vista to keep my pc secure? funny story.Pff. Vista. W7 is where it's at. On an unrelated note, Windows Firewall actually does a fairly good job (on W7 anyway, can't speak for Vista) of keeping threats out. Microsoft Security Essentials is free, and does a very good job (in between Avira and Avast if not better) of keeping threats out. Sentra and TheWhitePhoenix like this Link to comment

Astral Serpent
I use avast and it works well for me, but I honestly never get viruses, how the hell do you guys pick them up? But I guess it helps to not download bestiality related pornography from russian sites with 'FREE SEX' ads. Link to comment
Malkav
I never used a firewall : (. Link to comment
'eGG.
I recommend Bullguard. http://www.bullguard.com/ I discovered it when I did some work experience in a internet cafe, thr guy that ran the cafe used it on all his computers. It has Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti spam, ANTI EVERYTHING, all in one program, with 24/7 online support One time I got a nasty virus Bullguard couldnt remove automatically, so it creates a report and sends it off, got a e-mail reply within an hour, with step by step instructions on how to manually remove. It has a 60day free trial. If you decided to use this, could you please use an uncommon password and share me the details, as you can use 1 account on a number of computers.I already used my free trial, I think it logs your computers ID.So when trying to access Bullguard again, it instantly asks for a login, instead of details for a new account. BuLLGuard is the best I have used. Link to comment
MUG
I recommend Bullguard. Some jackass tricked my parents into switching to bullgaurd and their computer was boned within a week. Still haven't managed to completely clear that machine up since. I use avast and it works well for me, but I honestly never get viruses, how the hell do you guys pick them up? But I guess it helps to not download bestiality related pornography from russian sites with 'FREE SEX' ads.Honestly, its a mystery to me as I don't tend to visit "dodgey" sites or what not, and any stuff i get from TPB is always from verified submitters. It is the first virus I had on the machine though. Link to comment
'eGG.
Well, its not ever been a problem for me. The only problem I have with it, is my free trial ran out.I would have to format my HDD to able use another 60 day free trial, I would also have to create another e-mail account. But it can be demanding on resources, so if your parents computer is shit, that sucks. Viruses are everywhere on the internet, dont always have to go on porn sites. Also without a firewall, your ports can be scanned by h4xz0r.No firewall is like finding someone handcuffed to a park bench with a gag in their mouth and kekz already around their ankles.Fuck the soap and definitely not gonna using no vaseline..... yaa dig nigga? Sentra
OK GIUS IMA BUY NORTOMDAFUK I ШAИИA 7HAT S7UFF T00 I prefer MSE for its simplicity and efficiency. Good protection, always informing about viruses and never tries to annoy you by spamming attentions like 'HECK YEAH I FOUND VIRUS IN YOUR CRAPPY PC, SAY THANKS TO ME YOU NAWB' or fill your RAM as KSE does. Like it.Avira is good too, but I hate it when it's time to change the license (hello pirateworld! ) Link to comment
Morabis
I use MSE and it's fine I have no problems with it. If you have a chance get rid of Vista. Link to comment
Eternal
Call me crazy but I don't use anti-virus at all on my windows system and I've been perfectly fine. ^^ The only security I have is Windows Firewall Link to comment
Azatha
^ You are insane. I use AVG. Link to comment
Mog
Personally, I would use either Avast, or Panda Anti Virus. Both work well, and they don't cause slow downs when running scans. Link to comment
minilogoguy18
I'm gonna bump this mad old thread up. So basically the Webroot that my ex paid for is about to run out and I'm not about to buy any antivirus, gonna try to go with Avira with the windows firewall combo (win7 x64), is that a decent setup for being totally free? I've had a pretty good experience with it in the past. It found a Trojan that was on my external HDD at one point. The only downside to it is every once in awhile after it updates it will pop up a large windowed advertisement to purchase the product. Link to comment
