Hopefully NPCs will behave as they do in SP soon, bots are so dumb and unchallenging to fight.

 

Agreed. If people think the SP AI is bad, MP is atrocious.

 

It's been awhile since I played MP, but didn't the bots have 'slightly' better intelligence if the player requested to duel with them? Even then, not enough to really brag about.

Improving AI is not a focus at OpenJK at the moment, but it might be something to investigate in the future. I agree that better AI is better.

In terms of Steam, is it at all possible to patch people with any upgrades via that? Or will a standalone installer be used that covers both the CD version and Steam version?

Steam version should be the very same version as cd version with updates.  If a new "patch" comes out one thing for sure is that steam won't deploy it. specialy since it's a non official patch.

well i only found out about this site while reading a post on LucasForums... I also browse jediknight3.filefront.com, so i was until today ignorant of this site. it would good to assume that many doesn't know about this and it would good also to advert on filefront moddb and alike.

I wonder how much of this could apply retroactively to Voyager Elite Force. If I remember right it uses either MD2 or MD3 character models, but the scripting, BSP structure, and overall AI should be largely the same.

Also, several Elite Force source files (READ: not the full source) were previously released by individual Raven folk. See this (scroll way down for Elite Force stuff). Getting the source to work with elite force is a brilliant idea, i loved that game so much.

 

Eezstreet, quick question.  Is OpenJK built on top of Open Jedi Project?  That had years of bug fixes in the already released portions of the game so would save the community a lot of effort :D.  Man, the opening up of the source is so exciting!

I'm not eezstreet, may I still answer? If not, screw you I'm doing it anyway.

 

No, this is not built on top of Open Jedi Project, it's largely orthogonal to it. You can still play Open Jedi Project in OpenJK. OPJ is a Mod, OpenJK the engine (although an improved modbase is included with the source).

OJP added the JK2 gametypes back in. This is a mod thing, and isn't something we're going to actively support (OpenJK isn't a gameplay changer, it's a general game improvement suite)

No, it's built off of modbase, which is better in terms of bugfixes, since it's had all of the OJP fixes, plus more. Not to say it isn't compatible with OJP though, it most certainly is. And I hear there's a new version of EoC which uses SP code as well.

The game/cgame/ui projects have been replaced by modbase, which was a more recent effort at providing a clean and secure code base, including fixes not present in the dated OJP Basic project.

When I open the link for where the download is (whether JO or JA), a message box pops up saying "As of 2013-04-08, this project is no longer under active development." When I click the download button, another message pops up saying "Unable to find any mirror information for the "/asteroids_code.zip" file. Please select another file."

Is the source no longer available for these two games? It seems ludicrous of them to release it--for what, a week?--and then delete the files. Is there any other location one might get a hold of it? Anyone willing to upload them? This is incredibly frustrating.

Yeah, we're not quite sure what happened there yet. Raven is probably still figuring it out themselves. The main project, OpenJK, is here - that's basically the original code with various improvements. (Not quite ready yet, give it a couple of days.)

Yikes. That almost sounds like they were asked to pull it from somewhere higher up. For the source to disappear like that is concerning. Glad I grabbed it while I could.

Christ, I got the Outcast one but the JA one 404'd on me. Seems someone must be working really hard to avoid spreading these files. Fortunately, I found yet another link which actually worked.

EDIT: Although, now, I've jumped on the bandwagon of the OpenJK project anyway. Still, it's nice to have the official, untouched release as well just in case.

Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy repos have been pulled officially by Raven. Raven will not disclose exactly why the repos were pulled down, in order to not draw further attention to the issue. The coding community is well aware of the issue and we've been proactive in eliminating any further concern with it. So far we have no word as to when they're coming back up (if at all)

 

OpenJK is still up/unaffected by these problems, and we are uncertain what's in store for the source code. I'll let you know once we get an ETA or any further word.
