  1. DarthValeria liked an article by Circa, JKHub turns 9 with a new theme, contest & more
That’s right, it’s been nine years since the Hub launched. Normally I would love to wait until the 10th year to make this big of a change, but I think this revamp is long overdue. Initially, when we announced JKHub 2.0, we planned for a redesign like this but life and complications get in the way. I’m sure most of you thought it would never come, or lost interest, but hopefully the wait was worth it.
    New theme
This theme was originally designed by a designer named CodeByte, so all respect and gratitude goes to them. However, I’ve made a lot of special modifications myself. We still have our own identity, so anyone worried about JKHub using some random theme shared by various other sites out there: don’t worry.
I wanted to make the switch to a dark theme by default, which I know can be a bit divisive among people, so I also wanted to have a toggle to easily switch between dark and light themes, give everyone a choice. You can find it at the top next to the Create button.
The biggest change I wanted to make with this theme is to give the front page more relevant and appealing information. The slider will serve latest news items, similar to the JKHub bar. It breathes some life into the front page and gives a contact point for new visitors to visit either the Getting Started page or the latest news items. Since news is quite sparse in the JK community, I felt featuring it so prominently in the past was a bit tacky in the way we used to, and hoping this new page is much more inviting and appealing, especially for newcomers.
    Achievement system
You may have noticed a few weeks ago that you suddenly gained some random achievements for seemingly no reason. That’s because it is a new feature that Invision introduced and I decided to enable it early to see how it would work. Luckily it counts everything that you have previously posted, so if you’ve been around for awhile, chances are you have a few badges and ranks already. The ultimate goal of this system is to give a small incentive to engage more with the forum and file community. You gain points by posting, submitting mods, liking, getting likes, etc.
The biggest benefit to this new system is that we can finally award contest winners with custom badges. All previous contest winners have proactively received a badge for the contest they won in the past. Each one is made custom to that specific contest by us, and will show as "rare" since only one person receives it. You can see an example on this profile.
    Tutorial & Wiki relocation
Some may recall we used to have a dedicated tutorial system which was eventually deprecated from lack of development of the plugin we used. That forced us to convert them all into normal forum threads, which sufficed for getting the info out there for people to read. Now, with the newest software there is actually a good system built in that we also use for news posts called Databases. This is essentially a lightweight wiki-style system that we think will be perfect for tutorials to live, because it allows anyone to edit them (with approval of course) so we can ensure that our tutorials have the current and correct info, even if the original author hasn’t been seen in years.
That same system is where the wiki is also going to be moving to. The wiki has been the neglected child in the JKHub family. There is a lot of good content on there, but it’s not nearly as much as what could or should be. Two big barriers we notice people not bothering with it is that it requires a whole new and separate account to contribute to it, and it also requires learning of wiki markdown which can be confusing for people to learn. Our new system will be much more user-friendly, convenient, and integrated with the rest of JKHub as a whole, like search and content feeds.
I’m hoping this new system for the tutorials and the wiki will help put more of a focus on community-driven content, and not feel so out of reach to contribute to. Right now we are still in the process of moving things over. You may notice some tutorials have been moved and some haven't. The old ones are still accessible before they are moved. We are about halfway done, but due to the process, this will take awhile. I'm hoping to have them all moved over in the next 2 weeks or so. A full post will be made about it and how everyone can contribute and edit existing tutorials.
    Partner Servers
This is more of a "bonus" feature of this big update, but I thought it was a pretty cool addition. We now have a page that displays servers of the groups that partner with us as part of the JKHub Network. The network is just a simple way to collect the major and minor groups and communities around Jedi Outcast and Academy into one area to make it easy for newcomers and veterans to find them. If you have a community you want featured in our network, just let us know! We link to servers on the server page, and websites and Discord servers in the JKHub Bar. It’s great way to expose your clans or groups to new eyes.
    Ported content policy
I’m sure y’all are tired of seeing this come up in these news posts, and I agree. However, effective immediately, we are returning to our previous policy regarding ported content. That means as follows:
Any content taken from a source outside of Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy is considered "ported content" and is technically the legal property of the relevant copyright holder. This content is allowed in our file section with the stipulation that more than the bare minimum was done. Some kind of original work must be put into the mod.
An example of the bare minimum we would allow: a playermodel ported from Fortnite must be fully weighted to the JKA skeleton and work correctly in the game with NPC files, MP icons or SP menu support and sounds. Simply pasting it in Blender and exporting it to GLM may seem good, but then isn’t tested beyond the "it works!" factor and doesn’t actually work with animations properly or any way to actually use it outside of the /model command. If you use content you didn’t create, put as much effort into the experience as possible to show you also know what you’re doing.
This is a very subjective policy and each case will be very different. But we feel that enough ported content is being made outside our Files section that we would be shooting ourselves in the foot if we didn’t allow it in some capacity. Our outlook has always been to encourage creators to do as much work themselves as possible when it comes to mods. Copying someone else’s work is never as honorable as creating it yourself, however a lot of knowledge can be gained from using another’s work.
The biggest part of this policy is honesty. You have to list where your content comes from. This has always been our policy, even with other modders’ content, but is even more important with ported content. You did not create it, so please do not pretend you did. Be as explicit as possible with your sources. Also be aware that your ported mods will be subject to termination if we ever get contacted by copyright holders. Our latest file submission rules can always be found here.
    Donations return
You may have noticed that Caelum has left us again. You also may remember that he took over financial responsibility of JKHub for a few years, and we thank him greatly for that. However we are now back to operating all on our own again. This means we have costs again. Yay.
The request is always simple: we need money. This community has always been generous with donating towards a resource like JKHub over the years, and I don’t doubt you will show up again. If you are fortunate enough to have some extra cash and want to see this community continue and thrive, please consider donating.
I’ll be even more blunt than that. Our estimated yearly costs are around $400. We would love to get to that goal by December. Donors that donate over $20 USD will gain a special badge here on the website.
A full post will be dedicated to this soon, complete with the traditional progress bar to help illustrate our progress.

    New contest
Part of the birthday celebration is a new contest! It’s not "birthday" themed necessarily, but we will be thrilled if you make any (birthday cake thermal detonator mod when). The theme for this contest is called Summer Days, which is exactly what it sounds like. Summer themed mods are the goal here (sorry to those who live in the upside-down where it is not summer right now). I know this may seem a bit late, it's already nearly August, but that means we have 2 months left! Examples to help you out:
pools beaches swimming attire lemonade beachball volleyball backyard barbecue fireworks campfires sunny weather rosh in a speedo ice cream A few modern games have done this as part of their seasons, like Call of Duty, Fortnite, etc. so if you need inspiration I recommend looking up what they did for those.
Of course the winner will be voted on by the community in a poll here, and will receive a badge on their profile showing they won, and added to the contest page. The mod will be a featured file across the site until the next contest.
    Rules
You can only enter your own creations. You may team up with another modder. Any external content you did not make must be explicitly referenced in the description and readme file. You may enter more than one file. You may enter files that were created previous to this contest, as long as they abide by the rules. Any content is welcome, including skins, models, maps, weapons, menu mods, etc. Just make sure it abides by the rules. Files can be for Jedi Academy and/or Jedi Outcast. We will assume files are for JKA unless specified otherwise. If a large number of mods are submitted, more than one winner may be chosen. The deadline for submitting content is September 12, 2021, September 14, after which a poll will be opened. The poll will be closed by the morning of September 20, 2021. Submit to Summer Days Contest
I'd also like to quickly point out that we are now moving contest submissions to their relative categories in the files area and instead use the tag system to organize them. You can see previous contest entries on this page. Entries are moved to their specific categories after the contest is over.
    Closing
That was a lot of info to cover in one news post, so dedicated posts for a couple of these topics might be made, to feature them more heavily and gain more eyes on them and provide more details. A lot has been going on behind the scenes over these last few months and I'm really glad we can finally show some of it to y'all. I'm sure it feels very stagnant until now but hopefully some of these things will breathe some new life into this place. Let us know your thoughts and questions in the comments!
EDIT: We are also testing out language options for the website. Only interface items will be translated, and we still require all posted content to be in English where possible. Check out the language selector in the bottom left of the page and if we're missing your native language, let us know.
  2. ScottyMcGeester liked an article by Circa, Jedi Outcast and Academy come to consoles
Yes, we are alive. It's also my birthday, so send me cake and chocolate, please. Or don't. Don't let strangers on the internet tell you what to do.
It's no secret that news around the Jedi Knight universe has been extremely sparse over the last few years. This should be no surprise to anyone, due to Jedi Academy turning sixteen this year. I know a lot of people expect us to do something every year for the anniversary of the release, but we haven't and probably won't continue to until the 20th, if we make it that far. I'll give a quick shout out and say Jedi Academy is turning 16 this month, on September 16. Happy birthday to me, and happy early birthday to JKA.
Moving on. Yesterday, Nintendo hosted a Nintendo Direct, which is their main method of announcing news about their hardware and games. Among the slew of games announced that were coming to Nintendo Switch, the beloved game we know and love Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was a shocking addition to the lineup.
Aspyr is the developer that was originally behind the port of Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy to Mac, so it's no surprise they are behind this port as well. The surprise though, is that there's a port at all. No doubt this was a move approved by Disney and Lucasfilm, which makes it a random one, other than acknowledging that their older games are desired by many still to this day. Later that day, it was confirmed by IGN that Jedi Academy would also be coming to Nintendo Switch at a later date in early 2020, as well as both games coming to PlayStation 4 as well. The push to get these games to consoles all of a sudden is very unexpected surprise, but a welcome one. Not only will they be on these systems, but Jedi Academy was made available on the Xbox One Marketplace earlier this year as well, via the Backwards Compatibility program. Perhaps we will see Jedi Outcast make it's way there as well. It's clear that these games are still beloved by many fans even to this day, and Lucasfilm and Disney are still acknowledging that they exist to the point of re-leasing them. The cynics among us would say it's just to make more money, which of course it is, but they could have released any old game but they chose these. What makes it more interesting is they do this so close to their new game's release, Jedi: Fallen Order. Getting the word "jedi" in as many digital marketplaces as possible may be their ultimate goal here, who knows. They also have the new physical collector's additions being released by Limited Run games soon, which was announced at E3 earlier this year, though those will be for PC only. What are your thoughts on this? Do you have a Switch or PS4 that you'll be trying out these games on?
  3. ScottyMcGeester liked an article by Circa, Limited run of physical copies of Jedi Outcast and Academy
For you people that still adore physical copies, Limited Run Games is releasing brand new copies of Jedi Outcast and Academy. For those unfamiliar, Limited Run Games is a company that makes exactly that: prints limited runs of select games. They announced a bunch of Star Wars games awhile ago, including Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy. Unfortunately we missed the DF2 order window, but luckily I noticed the JK2 and JKA ones were announced today. Orders will begin on April 24th at 10am EST and then later at 6pm EST.
There are a couple editions to choose from that come with some really cool collector's editions items. Also of note, is there are PC, PS4, and Switch options, which is nice for those that wanted the new console ports, but were wanting a physical copy instead of digital.

Check out the news posts for both games here: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. Orders will take place on their website.
  4. ooeJack liked an article by Circa, Limited Run editions arrive
As most people around here know, the third party company dedicated to making limited collector’s editions of retro video games, Limited Run Games, did a run of Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, back in April. Obviously orders were limited for these, but they have finally begun to arrive at peoples’ homes over the last few weeks. I personally ordered the PC version of both JO and JA, and thought people might be interested in details of these editions.
First off, these come with a lot of stuff. I’ll be posting pictures of all of it, and go into a little detail on each thing.
    Jedi Outcast (Overview)
    Jedi Academy (Overview)
    Jedi Outcast Concept Art
The concept art post cards are really cool. I’m sure these were somewhere on the internet before, but this was the first time I had seen them. One looks like the howler NPC that we didn’t end up seeing until JKA. Another is showing the Doomgiver’s underbelly, and the last is the outside of Kejim Outpost.
    Jedi Academy Concept Art
I love saber hilt concept art and these are pretty darn close to what they look like in-game. The Yavin Runner shuttle design is pretty cool and I always thought it looked like something you’d see zooming around Coruscant. The other cards just basically show shots from random levels, which isn’t nearly as cool.
    Retrospectives
Each come with a small booklet that has a little statement from Edwin Evans-Thirwell and Ed Smith, who I believe are gaming journalists. I feel this was a huge missed opportunity to have retrospectives from the developers themselves. These are very wordy and one talks mostly about Movie Battles, which I won’t deny is the most popular mode these days, but is odd to mention in a retrospective meant to talk about the game’s history itself, not a fan made mod. Nonetheless, still cool.
    Thumb drive installers
One of the interesting parts of these bundles is the thumb drive. Both include an .exe installer for the game, and a PDF of the original guide that was included with the game back in the day. The installers seem to be brand new, and allow you to install each game without a disc at all. I verified that you can copy the installer, remove the drive, and install it from anywhere. Each is the latest version of the game (JK2 SP 1.03, MP 1.04 | JKA 1.01) and don’t need the disc to run. 😳 I was glad for this because I didn’t want to ever have to open the CD packaging (not that I’d need the installers anyway, but if Steam or GOG ever magically disappear, I’m still safe. It’s just nice that they actually are useful. I wasn’t expecting anything on these 2GB drives, but when I saw installers, I half expected them to just be disc dumps.
    Thoughts?
Overall these are awesome collector’s editions. Huge thanks to Limited Run Games for making these and still giving so much love to games considered to be dead. These games will always live on here on JKHub, on the servers, in the communities, and now on our shelves and walls. I will be hanging at least one of the posters at my place, and the pins are going on my car sun visor, for sure. Anyone else get theirs? Any non-PC editions to share?

Modding is a complicated profession. I don't like doing contests this close together, but this one was requested a lot too and it's probably best to start it now while the show is airing and hype is strongest. You'll have more time than ever to work on this contest, so I better see a ton of participants!
The hit new Star Wars television series, The Mandalorian, has taken the world by storm in popularity and as Star Wars fans here at JKHub, naturally taken us as well. As usual, new official Star Wars content comes out and the modders race to adapt characters, locations, and weapons into our favorite games Jedi Outcast and Academy. Though activity is undoubtedly at an all time low this year around here, that doesn't mean people aren't hard at work on their various projects. There have already been a handful of cool Mando-related mods made after last year's debut of the show.
This contest is just like the others. Create your own mods for either JK2 or JKA that have something to do with The Mandalorian, any season. It can be maps, models, skins, animations, mini-mods, etc. If it goes in our Files section, it can be submitted. That also means no ported content allowed, of course. Here are the rules in bullet form, as per tradition.

    Rules:
All submissions must be related the The Mandalorian series. The deadline for submitting content is February 1, 2021, after which a poll will be opened. The poll will be closed by the morning of February 6, 2021. Awards
We are still waiting on a few things to have the awards system built into the forum software. I don't expect it to be there even by the time this contest is done, and I really apologize for that. I will do what I can to maybe come up with some temporary alternative in the meantime. I think having a badge on your profile for contest winners would be really cool, and I'm sure y'all would agree. Once it's implemented though, all previous contest winners will get their respective award, so don't worry.
How do I submit my mod?
Our goal is to make it as simple as possible for everyone involved. The way you submit your file for this contest is to upload them as normal files in our file section, but using the category called Contest Entries.

Click the button below, and submit your mod as you normally would. The category should be set to The Mandalorian Contest already. If you don't enter it there, your file won't be entered until you do. If you realize that you didn't do that, PM a staff member and we can change it for you. Good luck and happy hunting!

You can only enter your own creations. You may team up with another modder. Any external content you did not make must be explicitly referenced in the description and readme file. You may enter more than one file.

  19. ooeJack liked an article by Circa, Jedi Academy launches on PS4 and Switch
Oh yes, another console release. We knew this was coming after it was announced back in September, and we got Jedi Outcast during that time. The launch of JK2 was a success overall, with only a few minor complaints and one big one: save states don't overwrite, so you have to periodically delete them as you go. Apparently we still have save storage restrictions, even in 2020. Other than that, as primarily as console player, it was a big treat to be able to play as Kyle Katarn on my big screen.
Jedi Academy launched on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch today, at the price point of $19.99 USD in both digital stores. This time they include both singleplayer and multiplayer experiences, which is worth noting because the Jedi Outcast release only contained singleplayer. No doubt this was to consolidate servers to just one game. We also get a fancy new trailer for this, which is also interesting because it features almost exclusively multiplayer footage. Check it out below.
Both versions of the game are basically the same except for some obvious differences. The PS4 version has trophies (achievements) which can be fun to obtain. The Switch version will have motion controls to help with aiming, though I don't think it really helps that much, personally. If you're trying to decide which version to get, just keep in mind those two features, but also that the Switch version can also be played in portable mode (of course), and that you will need PS Plus and Switch Online to play online. There are cheats, just like in the Jedi Outcast port, however it has a different button combination. I updated my tutorial for that here. Also take note that there is no split-screen in these versions. Lots of people assumed there would be, since that feature existed in the original Xbox and GameCube versions, but not this time.
Speaking of online, it's a bit interesting to me. There is no server browser, there is only matchmaking and solo bots for offline. We haven't seen this, even in mods for the games. Obviously matchmaking is popular these days because it's more user friendly in terms of sitting down and playing a few games, rather than worrying about finding a server to play on. This also means there are no custom server settings. I only joined one game so far, and I forgot to see if it had force powers enabled, but I'm wondering if there are just multiple servers with different settings and it will just drop you in random ones. If anyone tests that, I can update this section.
I also noticed that they fill the servers with bots, disguised as players. This is not uncommon, even in modern games (Battlefront II does it, as a Star Wars related example), however it's painfully obvious in old games like this. The bot AI is just obnoxiously bad. You can immediately tell a player is a bot by the way they constantly swing with blue/fast style, while running backwards on a predictive path, sometimes even glitching in the same four-step vicinity. I get why they did this, because it's the same reason why clans and big servers have been doing it on PC since 2003: to fill servers to attract real players and keep them playing. For matchmaking it makes a lot more sense, than it does even for server browsers.
I don't expect this to be a game where suddenly everyone is playing it again on consoles. When I played it, it was laggy. Hopefully that's just due to the influx of new connections today. There's no group or party system, but there is a new invite button I noticed, but you can only use it when you're in a server. It's simple features like that, that we have in modern games, that will hinder any chance of success this game will have in a modern environment. However, it's going to be a great way to hop in with some friends and have some saber-clashing fun every once in awhile. I also noticed they added the ability to turn off your lightsaber. That was a much needed feature we all asked for in Outcast and they never added it. Looks like they listened and added it!
I recorded a clip of my first boot of the game on PS4. I know a lot of people here will be interested in seeing how the menus work on console. They are extremely clunky, which just shows how minimal work went into this port, but it works good enough. You'll notice the matchmaking button instead of join a server, and how it searches and throws you in. It's odd seeing it this way, after 17 years of seeing it another way.
If you're not from around this community and don't know which game to get, Outcast or Academy, I think everyone would recommend Outcast in this case. Not only does it come first in the story, it has an overall better story and level design. However it does not have multiplayer. You also don't get a lightsaber until halfway through the game, which is a big turn-off for a lot of people, apparently. If you're one of those people, you could just use cheats to give you a lightsaber from the start, or you may want Jedi Academy instead. You could also just get both. I recommend getting both, but I'm clearly biased.
Which version are you getting, if either? Did you get Jedi Outcast on either platform yet? If so, how do you think these ports hold up? Buy Jedi Academy at the links below on your respective console's store!

Which version are you getting, if either? Did you get Jedi Outcast on either platform yet? If so, how do you think these ports hold up? Buy Jedi Academy at the links below on your respective console's store!
