  1. Well the true test then would be the original model and your model as an overlay. Because the reality of it would be that nobody copies every polygon perfectly, even when trying. Verts would be slightly off all over the place. In other words a fake of a painting could be determined, it's the same with a model. If your model were put directly over the original, would all the verts match up perfect?

  2. The Battlefront maps have a totally different scale. On top of the fact that EA's EULA doesn't have the same clauses the "Disney" EULA does, they just wouldn't be fun in JKA. Even older school stuff just wouldn't play the same, or even enjoyably.

Are we talking about the ORIGINAL Battlefront 2 by Viceral? Or are we talking about EA's Pay to win mess? Cause if it's the latter, no. The former, however, I can see as possible to add into JKA. :)

By "Viceral" I assume you mean Pandemic Studios.

  3. I'm going to play devil's advocate here, but for attacking hordes of enemies I've always loved the original Battlefront II. I love that force speed is about taking longer strides instead of multiplying the number of steps per second. I love that the moves were built to slice down enemies and keep moving.

For one on one combat I always loved the Revenge of the Sith game. As much as I adore JO and JA, it always felt more comfortable to me to not have the camera behind the jedi in force duels. I always loved the versus combat, whether against the computer or another player. What JO/JA has going for it is a nuanced setup -- it matters when and how you strike. What it lacks, and what Revenge of the Sith has, is fluidity in animation. I may not be quite as much in control, but my character truly looks like a jedi instead of someone flailing a sword around. I still wish there were a quality fighting-only game that starred all Star Wars characters. Like Soul Calibur-level quality, but only Star Wars characters. And no, Masters of Teras Kasi doesn't count.

In all honesty though, aside from what @@IrocJeff mentioned if the number of active players gets inflated by pirates it actually helps instead of hurting, because they think people like the game. Sure, some corner of development notices there are lots of pirates, but some other corner (the PR corner) says "OH HEY! LOOK AT OUR PLAYER NUMBERS!"

Besides, this sounds more like a justification to pirate the game rather than a chance to stick it to the man.

  5. This youth today is waaaaay different than us, "elders".

    I'm 31, but sometimes I feel like I'm 51. Like I was born in '60's.

Back in the day we haven't got internet or games that much.

We played as normal kids outside.

WE, we enjoyed SW as a franchise, as a story, as a book.

Luke Skywalker was our hero and he still is.....my hero.

That is why we are disappointed with the death of LUKE and younger kids aren't.

Yeah, but I'm almost 40 and I love it. I mean truly to each their own, but I love the fact that Luke isn't invincible. He gave himself in sacrifice so that good could live on, so that a new rebellion could begin. He was a broken man that tapped back into the force for all that was left in him. It sucks that Luke is gone, I totally agree with that. I had kind of hoped that he would train Rey longer. But if he had to go, it would be in defense of a sister he loved and a cause he believed in. I guess that's why I can understand the way he went out. In regards to viewing it as a saga, I see it that way too. Characters come and characters go, yet the story, the world moves on.

Still, I respect that people don't have the same opinions. I guess it's just hard to understand the severity of the hate. Pull it from canon? It just feels rather harsh. I mean we had the yuuzhan vong in the EU -- this is mounds better than that. It truly would have been great if Luke finished the saga alive, but it is what it is, and if he had to go out I like the way he did.

  6. I'm genuinely surprised by all the hate. It was a really enjoyable experience for me, even if it's not the top of the list as far as the films go. I saw it as a clear passing of the torch without feeling too heavy handed about it. I loved that Luke showed power like we haven't seen before. I love that Leia gets the force nod we all knew was there, even if the execution of it wasn't perfect. A lot of the things I've seen questioned across the internet have had precedent in other films.

But with all that being said I'm more disappointed that people didn't enjoy themselves. It's like they went into a different film than I did, or walked into the theater already offended by things they heard on the internet.

  7. I'll say two more things -- 1) Front-page change.org campaigns that actually had an effect hover around 120k, which this is creeping close to, and 2) if nothing else, people are taking notice. What really needs to happen at this point is for the media to pick up the petition. People can always email tips@ emails (such as tips@kotaku.com). When I worked in lower-end media I did this all the time. In the end gaming companies seem to move when pressured by media more than consumers.

Also, I'll happily eat my words if this works

  8. The best this might do is convince Lucasfilm/Disney not to use EA when the contract is up, but they're not going to renege on a deal short of it being in the original contract. Like if there were a clause in there that basically said EA had to have [x] customer rating/positive reviews/etc in order to hold up the contract, I could see that being a thing. Otherwise it'll just be a matter of waiting out the term of the deal, which I would guess is probably around 10 years or so considering how long it takes to make games.

  9. It's their own fault:

5.EA also shut down Galaxy in Turmoil project which was going to become a much better Battlefront game compare to EA ones.(An indie developer's game was surpassing Dice's)

I can follow you on all your other points, but we knew so very little about Galaxy in Turmoil that you can't realistically say it would have been better. No substantial gameplay was ever shown, even. And microtransactions aside 2017 SWBF2 looks amazing in every respect. I'm utterly convinced that I'll always adore the 2005 version more, but let's not get hasty and judge a game that has no real substance yet to be better.

  10. ...actually it was supposed to be Jedi Knight 2 but then Lucasarts management saw how awful the game looked and played and for that they decided to outsource jedi knight 2 to Raven and turn that version into a cash grab movie tie in. Is it true ?

It's true. I have the book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts which details it. Not exactly in that way, but it was originally going to be a sequel

  11. There are just as many people who highly praise a badly done port or reskin. Give me an example (link to post) of said harshness to someone who just started learning to make something from scratch, I have yet to see that around here.

Touche the port thing. People do drool over ports. But I don't see eye to eye with scratch builders on that front either, really. I know they want everything to be community made, and I think that's great, but the demand is so much higher than the community can supply.

As far as an example, I don't want to call anyone out, I don't think it's right. I felt the criticism pretty clearly when working on the Dark Forces mod, to be honest. I think many took the notion of "it's not good enough", whereas I took the stance of "well nobody's helping anyway... so". Sometimes it feels very Little Red Hen. To be fair, I suppose the harshness comes from the (what I deem as) incredibly high standards the JKHub community has.

But I'm not looking to start any arguments. Truthfully it's why I try to stay quiet most of the time. This community is very different from most modding communities I've been around in my 15+ years of modding, and I try to respect the way you guys do things without getting *too* vocal.

  12. I went over the mod again and to be honest, it looked good back then, but now it looks so dated I feel like it needs a complete overhaul. Not just a re-skin, but an almost complete do over. I'm thinking about making a pure Star Wars shooter with the openjk code which will probably benefit this mod. Do you have someone working on the code already?

The major problem with the 'dated' look is that there aren't even enough people interested in completing something on the DF mod's scale at our current circa 2006-ish art level, let alone having to work within newer tech, completely redoing all those levels.

The bottom line is that if you want a modern Star Wars shooter it needs to be done in a modern engine where the asset pipelines are already set up to allow fast production at high-end levels. No matter which way you slice it there's a huge undertaking in bringing this game up to semi-current standards. I've seen some amazing work by teams here, but in the end chasing the most modern technologies literally means you never catch up.

  13. I'm very glad you came back to the mod after so many years. The only think I would ask is that the Lightsaber and Forcepowers are kept in, but only accessible through cheat codes cause this is a mod primarily focusing on what Dark Forces originally was. :)

Add on: I don't know if you know this, but @@Teancum tried before you to bring it back and he did a good job. Maybe you guys can work together as well? :D

I had a build based on OpenJK that had several changes already rolling that we needed. It's around a year old now, but had all the important OJK updates in it as well as DF-specific stuff. It was released in the source code/map source I put out a while back, which consists of all the latest updates/files I could gather from past team members as well as my own work. Download link is below, and it's ready to build in Visual Studio 2012 Community Edition (which is free).

I can't remember all the changes I made to the code, but I do remember setting up the game so it would already read the /darkforces subfolder (meaning you could start it up without a command line), and adding an icon. There were a number of other things too, I just don't remember them. I left the force powers, sabers, etc enabled, but not active by default.

  14. I see Massassi as eventually going down at some point. It has changed webmasters many times.

Brian has owned/ran the site pretty much from day 1, actually.

But back to the point, another bonus is that, other than the initial upload, we're not talking bandwidth-hogging content. Even the newest mods have a max of 256x256 textures, and it's extremely rare that any one file is more than just a few megabytes in size. For me, this is a big one. I still view Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith as the best in the series, having started with them. I think a lot of folks could get a lot of enjoyment out of those two games + mods, and frankly it might be fun to see groups getting together for a bit of casual JK/MotS multiplayer action.

  15. We're a bit too focused on canon, aren't we? Clones on Theed doesn't actually work at all, but it makes for great gameplay. The old Battlefronts were that way too. Canon has to be thrown aside in some instances in favor of fun. I remember when the original SWBF2 came out people lost their minds that the Galactic Marine was the Commander class for the Republic, but in the end it brought something fun and unique.
