Tempust85 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Been a while: Now has a normal map (highpoly max mesh with the diffuse applied for the detail, then baked). Adjusted various things, rendered with 25% self illumination. NumberWan, Stoiss, dark_apprentice and 8 others like this
Nozyspy Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Looking very good! Though i think the underneath of his chin should go up straight after the tip of his beard, rather than sloping gently to his neck as it is now, since at the moment it looks as though that is actually the size of his chin. And that would be one hell of a big chin! Also, i realize his hair hasn't been textured yet, but in that pic it looks like he has been attacked by a grey blob! Tempust85 likes this
Tempust85 Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Lol, it looks better than a bald Luke. I'll have a look at the chin again, thanks. Nozyspy likes this
Nozyspy Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Haha, Jedi are never bald! The force flows through their hair as well! Unless you are Mace Windu, who is too much of a badass for hair. Darth Sion and Tempust85 like this

Archangel35757 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I would suggest reshaping his chin and jaw to match his original face... and then model the beard as a separate mesh. Jolly likes this
Tempust85 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I had done that except for the seperate mesh part. I also have a clone of the younger face to keep for reference. His beard is quite full sized, I feel I have it near spot-on.
Jolly Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I agree with @@Archangel35757 It looks a bit weird when its all one mesh.
Tempust85 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 It would achieve the same result for more work & I'm not having a dozen mesh parts for reskinning etc (aka Haps Anakin) so no, I won't be doing it. I've put alpha planes all over the beard for a fluffy look and I personally think it looks better now. Langerd and yeyo JK like this
Archangel35757 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 So if you hid all of the Alpha planes would his chin and jaw look like a clean shaven old Mark Hamill? Or did you pull the chin mesh down to help give the appearance of a beard?
Tempust85 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 As you can see in the previous screens I've posted, I've shaped the head mesh to give shape to the beard. It won't look pretty in JKA to do what you're thinking and I'm not entirely sure the beard alphas will even look nice. Anyways, update: hleV, dark_apprentice, yeyo JK and 11 others like this
Jolly Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 That looks much better. Keep up the good work !! Darth Sion likes this
Psyk0Sith Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Warp those planes every which way possible, don't reuse the same flat plane over and over. That way you maximize texture space and break symmetry. Archangel35757, Daedra and minilogoguy18 like this
Archangel35757 Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 It seems that you've made 2D planes that would be sort of perpendicular to the face mesh edges??? ...you should make overlapping planes similar to how the hair is done on this character: https://shop.3dtotal.com/swordmaster-3ds-max-download-only.html only group them tighter and curve them a bit more. Or similar to these: http://www.3dhit.co.uk/?showtopic=16919 Keep up the great work!
Tempust85 Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 I painted them onto the face using Max's object paint, then refined. There's 2 different hair textures (same sheet) on the beard. I've been warping them, but I guess it could use a bit more. I notice now that the front especially looks very repetitive, need to fix that... Daedra and Darth Sion like this
Tempust85 Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Bit less symmetrical, added some "fluff" to the hair: dark_apprentice, krkarr, DarthStiv and 7 others like this

Tempust85 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Update. Old hair kinda sucked (as was pointed out by Grab's point score lol) so did some more painting and added some alpha: That dark bit where the hair mesh and the plane mesh meet is unavoidable as it's shadowing on the mesh. krkarr, Darth Sion, eezstreet and 12 others like this
AshuraDX Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 That dark bit where the hair mesh and the plane mesh meet is unavoidable as it's shadowing on the mesh. wrong. apply a edit normals modifier and tweak the normals in that area, that will atleast decrease how noticeable it is - can't say it will vanish entirely Bek likes this
