  1. Another thing that does have potential is the uniform worn by the Imperials on Aldhani. It's a combination of the outfit and the armor worn by Imperial officers.

There is even an action figure of Cassian with the uniform. Could be used as a good reference.

Speaking of action figures, there is also one for Vel Sartha. She has become one of my favourite characters of the show (especially since the episode "The Eye"), and I would love to see a model of her being made one day.

  2. Okay, now that I've watched the first four episodes, here are my impressions so far:

    Spoiler

Within just a few episodes, this series has already delivered so much that has never been seen before in any Star Wars production, and it got me really excited. Personally, I think that ANDOR is, in many ways, the most innovative Star Wars show I've ever seen.

Let's start with the characters. From the main parts to the smaller parts, every single one feels rich and real. And even though everything is set in the Star Wars galaxy, you still get a feeling of familiarity. I mean, Imperial workers eat noodles while sitting in front of a computer, the miners look like the workers you would see in a factory nearby, and elderly people just have a chat with you. It's refreshing to see that, and much more, included in Star Wars. It gives you a feeling like actually being in that world. And that leads me to the next part.

Before the show was released, it has been announced that real sets have been built instead of using the StageCraft technology that has been used in the previous Star Wars shows since The Mandalorian. It really cranked up the quality and made the world feel more organic. Especially in the fourth episode, it was good to know that they actually shot on location, which means that they often walked for hours just to set up one scene. And the effort paid off, because it really feels different.

I'm also delighted that they are avoiding fan-service as much as possible in favour of putting a focus on the characters and telling a unique story that feels real in itself.  Of course there are still enough references to certain characters, places or events. But they are so subtle that it's more according to the motto "If you know, you know", instead of shoving every single bit of information right in your face. ANDOR is taking Star Wars further without getting lost in nostalgia.

Alright, four episodes down, eight to go. I'm looking forward to what is happening next!

  3. Those three episode have provided so much content to choose from.

Cassian's blaster could indeed be the Bryar pistol. In that case, we've already got one, as AshuraDX made one in 2017. And of course there's the Jedi Outcast version. As Ashura's design is very much like the one from Andor, we could tick that one off the list.

The mining guard uniform also looks very interesting. A great thing about it is that the colours are bright, which offers a great reference for modelers.

What you're doing with your models is outstanding. Each original character not only comes with a different design, but also with a different background based on your own world and concepts.

Your designs are very reminicent to the Yuuzhan Vong and the works of H.R. Giger (who created the concepts for the ALIEN films) and Rob Bottin (who created the creatures for THE THING, LEGEND and TOTAL RECALL).

I assume he is asking what that "other" software is exactly, since you voted "other". 😛 I am also curious.

Ah, I see. Well, I used to start modeling with SketchUp (or "Google SketchUp" as it was called back then).

In fact, I made Rey's staff and the TARDIS with SketchUp years ago, with the intention to convert the models in Blender. First I thought that I could model whatever I wanted and just get it in the game. But as I lacked the knowledge required to properly convert high poly models to make them work for Jedi Academy, I gave up on those projects.

Today, I'm still using it for completely personal projects. Many would call SketchUp a waste of time, or cry about the very thought that it isn't as advanced as all the other 3D modeling softwares. But so long as it's available, I will use it. Because out of all the 3D softwares I tried, SketchUp is still the easiest for me to use. And if I want the models to look better, I'm using Blender to polish them up.

Do the math, guys. This map was started in 2014. DarthDementous posted the last WIP screenshots in 2017. His last activity on this site was in 2021.

So, he had about four years to finish the map. But since he didn't, this project is likely dead. And I can't blame him for that, because he was likely working on the map alone. Not everyone is able to stem that workload. And that's something that happens in a modding community. Many promosing projects were simply abandoned, very often with no apparent reason. Modders are people like every single one of us, and if they decide to not continue working on something, they can do it without saying a word about it.

How's the result coming along? Also - how do you intend to increase the quality beyond the maximum .roq resolution supported by the game?

He has upscaled all of the Jedi Academy videos. He shared some of the results in this topic:

As for the ROQ files, I don't know if he attempted to convert them. My concern is that the upscaled videos need to be drastically compressed in order for the game to handle them. That's why I suggested to look for a way to replace ROQ videos with better video formats, such as AVI or MP4. If it can be done, adding higher quality videos shouldn't be a huge problem anymore.

Conversion process is giving me a bit of a headache. Instead of wasting time I'll just drop the MP4 versions here for anyone who wants to convert them and get these in-game.

I moved this topic to the WIP section. Even though it was me who started it, feel free to post whatever you have here. It's great that you've made these videos avaliable for everyone.

Anyone who can add something to this project are also welcomed here. I think it's a project that can be achieved through teamwork.

In principle, adding support for new video formats should very much be possible, but nobody has done it yet, to my knowledge.

If somebody could make that happen, that would be another milestone for the game. I mean, as far as I know, ROQ files can only handle a certain quality, which means that videos need to be heavily compressed in order for the game to actually accept them. Also, another issue is that the game doesn't support widescreen videos. That could be another thing to look out for.

Did a little dry run for you. This isn't quite optimized yet, but just a vague idea.

The JA cutscenes are rendered at a very odd aspect ratio, something vaguely similar to 7:6, requiring about a 30% horizontal stretch to properly render objects that are supposed to be a perfect circle.

The first photo is the original resolution, the second is what I consider the "best" workflow order (I upscale the video, then stretch it by 30% to the correct aspect ratio), and the third is what I consider overall inferior (stretched by 30% first, then upscaled), but it does have some perks. Stars look awful, very square and with more color bleed, but gradients like the one around the planet actually look a bit less block.

Next step would be doubling the FPS to 60 FPS, which is a pretty cut and dry process compared to upscaling.

    https://jkhub.org/albums/C3OCt9N

Looks very good. The second image, with the fixed aspect ratio first and the upscale later, is definitely better. That was the procedure I did. Personally, I also added film grain. The right amount can mask some flaws of the upscales that are hard to avoid.

Higher FPS are definitely not a bad idea. After all, most players are able to play the game with 60 FPS (at the very least), so it would definitely add some consistency.

That's funny, I had just started on doing this myself for JA with Video Enhance AI. Your results seem a bit better than what I got, I assume it's because you're using Gigapixel and doing things frame by frame?

I initially started with Gigapixel AI, but then gave up on that, as upscaling the videos frame by frame simply is too big of a task. When Video Enhanced came out, I moved to that software for that purpose.

I sourced some of the videos for the more recent upscales straight from the assets of the Gamecube version of Jedi Outcast. Like I said, the videos look far better than the PC cutscenes. The PC cutscenes are heavily compressed, while the Gamecube don't have that much of compression. That's why they are the perfect basis for upscaling. Jedi Academy on the other hand was trickier. The main problem was that some cutscenes were in 4:3 format, which resulted in planets looking like eggs. But once I converted them to the 16:9 format, they were much better material for upscaling.

The project was fun. In fact, I wanted to upscale all of the cutscenes, with the intention to get them into the game somehow. But since they added watermarks to the upscaled videos, I didn't continue the project.

But here's a question for those who have much better understanding with the engine: Is it possible to modify the game so that instead of ROQ files, it supports better files, like mp4 or avi?

Are these 4K textures worth it vs base textures?

If you want bigger and sharper versions of the standard textures, this mod is for you. But if you don't see any significant changes from the standard textures in the screenshots, don't bother downloading the mod at all. If you decide to download the mod anyways, keep in mind that you need a strong PC in order to handle the textures properly without any significant FPS drop.

    Quote

Or is the upscaling or AI upscaling just making the file bigger without adding anything or making it worth while I would assume?

Simple upscaling does pretty much nothing to images. You get bigger images, but no real details.

AI upscaling on the other hand is not only much more advanced, but also far superior to normal upscaling. Not only does it make images bigger and clearer, it also actually adds more details. And the results look extremely realistic.

I assume that the mod was made either with Gigapixel AI. Since 2019, when the mod was published, a lot more features have been added to the software, such as facial reconstruction. In fact, Gigapixel AI is already used by major studios to remaster the textures of their games.

  13. As the (season?) finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi was released yesterday, I think it's time to finally talk about it here. Still have to process the series, as there was a lot going on, but here are my thoughts so far:

    Spoiler

Okay, where should I start? First of all, I'm absolutely impressed. I expected a series that explored what Kenobi was doing between 'Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope', and I thought it would mostly be set on Tatooine. But that it would also bring the saga further by not only introducing new and interesting characters, but also fleshing out familiar ones, was something I didn't expect.

Obi-Wan's story was expanded perfectly. It's a good transition from prequel Obi-Wan to Ben Kenobi from the classic trilogy. It also added much more depth to his appearance in 'A New Hope', especially during the scene in which he is seeing Luke and Leia one last time before he gets killed by Darth Vader.

And even though Beru and Lars were mostly absent in the show, the way how they were portrayed in the last episode, and how they faced Reva, was awesome. I've read a speculation that they probably kicked some ass when the Stormtroopers arrived at their home during the events of 'A New Hope'. I don't want an entire story about it, but just imagining it is enough for me.

Another scene that is worth mentioning is the one with the Clone Trooper veteran who is living as a homeless man. Tis scene shows that, just like in reality, not all war veterans are treated well once their job is done. It was a necessary scene that really added realism to the Clone Troopers.

The Inquisitors were a good addition to the show. Out of all, Reva was definitely the most interesting. Every time she appeared, you could somehow see an inner conflict. As her story unfolded and her motivations became much clearer, it really increased the quality of the character by far. And Moses Ingram was the perfect choice for Reva.

I also loved Tala. The first time I saw Indira Varma in the trailer (I know her from shows like 'Torchwood' and 'Patrick Melrose'), my first thought was that she would definitely play an excellent Imperial officer. That she was actually one of the good ones was a surprise reveal to me. Compared to the other characters, we may have gotten only pieces of her background story, but that was enough for me to like her. I'm certain that we will see more of her in the future.

And as for the Obi-Wan and Darth Vader rematch, I was more than impressed. It was a perfect blend between the aesthetic of the prequels and the classics, with the raw style of the sequels. And the tragedy that was added to Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader made this scene perfect. Instead of only focusing on both characters duelling, the opportunity was taken to add more depth to them. And that is worth a lot.

This show has displayed the biggest strength of modern Star Wars yet again: Telling much with little means, rather than feeding the audience with too much information. The great thing is that if you pay attention, you will notice that many moments are connecting well to moments of the films.

That's it for now. Maybe I will add more later.

    Hello jkhub!

Looking for a Female wookiee player model. I haven't been able to find anything so I wanted to check here on the forums before I go digging up photoshop, blender, and 3ds max to start Frankensteining again.  A few variants and Jedi robes would be nice but I have no hopes something currently exists.  I'll also take suggestions on what models would be easiest to body swap together. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, nobody has ever done female Wookiees.

    Hi guys,

Can you help? I've recently been collecting all the older 2000s games from my glory days when PC gaming was life.... and JK II Outcast is one of my top favourite memories.

There's a map that I used to play on all the time in multiplayer but I can't find it anywhere! Anyone got any ideas of the name by the following description...

So you spawned outside on a platform that looked towards a building with an entrance and upper levels. You could fall off the platform into oblivion and die.

Inside you had empty swimming pools, and you could look at cameras to check where other players were. There was also a secret space with a rail gun inside that you could shoot down a corridor obliterating anyone who's inside the corridor.

I'm hoping so bad that someone remembers playing this map and can tell me where I can download it.

    Thanks!

Have you taken a look at this website? http://mrwonko.de/jk3files/Jedi Outcast/Maps/

It contains a lot, if not all, mods from jk2files.com and jk3files.com. Maybe you'll find that map there.

Would someone be willing to make Obi-Wan's blaster from the show as a replacement for the DL-44 in JKA?

    And another image:

I've added another image of the blaster to your post.

We should collect more reference images. The more images of the blaster we have, the better will be the basis for the modeler. At the moment, we only have very brief moments in which the blaster is seen. Unless the blaster is a specific type that has been already featured in Star Wars, we may have to wait for more images.
