      I helped barricade wat shader, it's a variation of the shader I used on a bunch of my models eg the Assassins Creed weapons and my Rancor skin

      create an alpha channel for your rust/dirt and put that as the last shader stage

      with 3d software it all boils down to wether you're good at remembering hotkeys or prefer Menus. I prefer menus, which is why I stay with max

      that shouldn't be too much of a performance hit, especially since only one of the models would be rendered at once - the check that updates the models according to damage will run and take a bit of performacne every frame but it shouldn't be critical

      it makes sense in a way - as a trooper you try to keep your gear as clean and intact as possible so broken parts will be exchanged asap, and since you drop in as a new, fresh soldier at spawn you wouldn't see heavy damage on his equipment
