I would like a indie game not based on Star Wars that has the combat system of Jedi Academy.

Do you think that someone could make an indie game not based on Star Wars that has the combat system of Jedi Academy? The non-Star Wars based is because that this way you avoid rights problems with Disney, plus that you also have more freedom and could attract people who do not like Star Wars, but would like a combat system so fabulous as the combat system of Jedi Academy. The beginning would be simple: you replace the lightsaber with a futuristic sword and the Force powers with psychic powers for example.

There have already been indies lately melee focused, such as Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Vampyr, but none are inspired by Jedi Knight games, so this does not seem so outlandish. Also I think it would be better only single player: it is increasingly difficult to stand out in multiplayer and singleplayer and the most successful games are single player, like God of War or Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Our team for OSP is working on exactly that (as the link above explains, we're looking for more staff to contribute right now) although SP is more of an afterthought than MP, as its main purpose is as a multiplayer combat game. But as the lore writer for the team, I can say that SP is definitely being kept in mind.

Though how you described it is essentially exactly what we're working on, so you might take some interest.

Making singleplayer games like these is a massive unclimbable mountain for any indie team. Multiplayer is easier to be successful with, unless you're in the mobile industry.

The above mentioned team is exactly what you should look into.

Yes, this is possible but it requires a lot of time and dedication. Cheapest way to approach this, is to modify Jedi Academy, and to release your work as a non-profitable mini-game (similar to MovieBattles 2, Jedi Knight Galaxies, Knights of the Force etc. etc.) But even if you somehow manage to pull it off, you still need to "sell" your idea if you wish to get some attention in the gaming community. Maybe you'll get lucky? Who knows, some great games started as simple mods! And indie games are really HOT right now.

Go for it.

You're right, but those games were examples of very successful singleplayer games. Successful singleplayer indie games would be Hellblade and Vampyr. In my opinion, making a purely multiplayer game inspired by the Jedi Knight is more likely to go unnoticed for the majority, since its public would be only those who played the multiplayer of Jedi Knight. In contrast, a story focused game can attract a larger public.

I would be surprised (and I highly doubt it) if the majority of Jedi Academy players would prefer the singleplayer, especially since the singleplayer in JKA isn't really good anyway.

I would prefer to appeal to a larger audience, not just Jedi Academy players, and for them probably a game with a good narrative would have more success than pure multiplayer. Was not Knight of the Old Republic more successful than the Jedi Knight despite lacking multiplayer?

You can hardly define an universal rule just by comparing JK to KOTOR, these are two completely different games.

If you want to appeal to a larger audience with a singleplayer game you need more than just a good combat mechanic. Mechanics are in fact proportionally much less important in a singleplayer game than in a multiplayer game when you take into account how much more a singleplayer game needs to be good. So yes, a singleplayer game with JK's gameplay mechanics could work, but you would need much more than that to make it successful.

Besides the fact that I don't think that you would cater to a larger audience by making it singleplayer.

And btw, the target audience for our project are not exclusively JK players.

It's true, but that addition would be a good story. For me single player with good story and gameplay is more likely to have more success than a pure multiplayer game.

Sure, God of War was great. The thing is, though, that the game wasn't made by a group of 5 people, it had an enormous budget, and it took them like what, 6 years to finish?

For a game to have a compelling, interesting story you would need: Great scenarists, great writers (for both dialogues and the story itself), great environment artists (so the world looks believable, and is pleasing to the eye). Then, you would also need voice actors (because nobody feels like reading through heaps of text, it's not 2002 anymore) and, of course, character artists + skilled animators if the game was supposed to have any cool interactions, and cutscenes. But, without being able to do any kind of motion capture (and they did have a loooot of that for Hellblade) it would still look mostly mediocre.

It is far less risky for us to just use the concepts that we know from the JK series and improve on them, rather than reinvent the wheel and try to cater to an audience we know nothing about. If Jedi Knight players give us a green light, and I know our community is very picky about projects like this, then I think people who have played and enjoyed JKO/JKA in the past will enjoy our game as well. We are actively trying to fix some of the issues those games have had, and improve on the idea regarding the free flow of combat, we hope to make people stick around for longer with the stuff that we want to add.

There is a lot of things which we would love to do, there are also lots of things we are dreaming of, that we can only hope will happen. So, I think you should really just give us a chance and put trust in an indie multiplayer project like ours. You will not be disappointed, but we need people to co-operate and throw tons of feedback at us if we want to have a resounding success here. :)

I'm not opposed to an indie multiplayer, but I prefer an indie singleplayer because I prefer a gameplay associated with a narrative, most of the successful indies are singleplayer, although many are 2D, but there are 3D cases like Furi or many inspired by Dark Souls, besides that the origins of Jedi Knight are singleplayer.

I understand where you are coming from and I most certainly endorse the idea, but, for example, our project's resources are limited to a point where making an interesting singleplayer game would be a far, far bigger undertaking than what we are making currently. Do not get me wrong, if we had the budget, or if our game ever proves successful as a multiplayer product, I would definitely consider adding some form of singleplayer gameplay to it.

While the Jedi Knight series began as a singleplayer adventure, it is beyond question that the later games' multiplayer aspects are what made it shine, and what enabled it to outlive many other games. Sure, JKO's singleplayer is one of the best out of any other Star Wars games, but would it gain as much recognition if it was not for the longevity that the ability to play with your friends offers?

I reckon this can be considered a rhetorical question.

I am 80% sure Ravensoft noticed this phenomenon, which is why Jedi Academy's multiplayer aspects are so fleshed out, and why it's singleplayer campaign was pretty much mediocre.

I second that. Gosh, I miss the good old days where every game had a story, like X-Wing, Tie Fighter,  Wing Commander, Strike Commander, etc.Heck, even flight sims back in the day had some kind of story on them.
