Don't get discouraged either way. It takes time. I've been playing for so long that I take the initial year for granted. My first song was row row row your boat.

10 minutes on basic theory. How songs are structured, I-IV-V(C F G) etc... 10 minutes on emulation. Learn a section of a song, learn basic melodies. The last 10 minutes should be a straight free jam with no breaks, practicing everything you studied in the last 50 minutes.

Heh, no problem. If you can, find some people to play with who are better than you. You'll pick up a lot just by emulation. -Speaking from my own growing pains from being self taught. A quick tip. Helped me a lot. Studying guitar for too long in one day is a fruitless exercise. Study one hour a day. 10 minutes working on learning a scale or practicing one you know. 10 minutes playing inane finger exercises. 10 minutes practicing a specific technique exclusively.(Alternate picking, strummi...

I'd recommend first and foremost that you build your finger strength and alternate picking ability by playing chromatically up the neck. (1-2-3-4 on each string. Go all the way up, come all the way back and shift one fret up. Do this all the way up the neck. Use a metronome and work on keeping time properly while alternating up and down picking.) Pretty soon power chords will be a joke to you.

The top mistakes self taught people run into are these: Not using their pinkie finger to fret chords or play scales. Holding the pick improperly. Developing bad habits that are hard to break. e.g. Not using their pinkies. A metronome is a huge part of learning to play chords properly as well as proper picking. (Alternate picking for example.) You can get one on your computer easily, and it's worth the time.

It's relative to the amount of time you put in. Depends on the speed your are playing, picking style etc... Practice with a metronome and practice going from one chord to another cleanly. Don't worry if you are playing something that doesn't sound "musical"
