Xbox One announced

I'm wondering what peoples' opinions are of the console. Personally, PS4 seems much better considering their conference didn't focus on TV and sports games. Also they showed the controller and seem more indie-oriented and customer friendly.

THAT THAT THAT AND THAT!

To be honest, the features being proposed seems rather impressive. Now MLG dudes will be able to jack off to hardcore pornography and play Call of Duty at the SAME TIME :o

But seriously, with the amount of income that comes out of console gaming, the XOne will bring about some interesting content.

Not sure if sarcastic or serious... the so called "features" of the Xbox One seem like a joke really. Running 3 different OSes on the same console? What?

Kinda sorta...to be fair, with what they will be running...three OS's doesn't seem all that bad

I didn't watch the live event, but read up on it a bit and watched some videos. It looks awesome from what I can see. Kinect looks impressive. The real treat will be to see what developers will be able to do with these next gen consoles.

I'm a big Call of Duty fan, so Ghosts looks sweet.

As far as used games go, this is all they have said:

Kinect is a complete gimmick. We were told that it was going to be impressive ~3-4 years ago and it still hasn't served any purpose outside of cheap motion games and fairly useless voice command features.

Ghosts is crossplatform, and not an exclusive.

Having multiple accounts on the same game on splitscreen is problematic then, and some of the newer games on PS4 I believe are able to support multiple PSN accounts on a shared screen and get achievements for those characters. PSN accounts are bound to the controller, not the game itself, and can be changed whenever. At least that's my understanding of it, because Diablo III appears to be PS4 only and uses characters stored either locally or on the cloud for different Battle.net accounts, which are attached to PSN accounts.

Or something along those lines, anyway.

Running 3 OSes is completely idiotic, outside of virtual machine environments. They should have just made it all use the same OS instead of switching around. In addition to the extra overhead, you probably have to wait for those OSes to boot for completely menial tasks, unless it boots all three at once and runs them in the background (which would murder performance btw, so I doubt it)

The only good to come out of this would be perhaps the touchscreen on the controller, which appears fairly limited in comparison to the PS4's screen due to its positioning and shape. Also the multitasking seems good, but it ought to be fairly standard on ANY OS to have multitasking these days (this is not 1994, people).

If it runs a watered down Windows 8 and has support for Metro apps there's also that too. Playing Angry Birds just got more real, bro.

I'm a massive Console player, it wasn't until just recently that I actually invested in a decent Computer with custom specs.

As far as the Xbox One goes, I've not read up about much of it to be honest, I'm not in the know how but I'm always skeptical of new consoles, computers or technology. I'm hoping that this isn't one of those things where they've been all, "Wow, look at how much the 360 made us, let's go make something better for half the price and earn double!". I'll be impressed by the improvement one way or another, I'm certain though whether that's enough to spend the cash and actually buy it, is another story. I'll be watching this one closely. My friends all have PS3's and when the fourth comes out, depending on how things go, I could lean to either side at this point.

The Xbox One is complete and absolute garbage. Allow me to pick apart everything they presented as glorious and "groundbreaking":

- The "redesigned controller" has a "precision" d-pad. Right, because it was such utter shit before. And we need precision on a d-pad...

- We have 8GB and shit tons of transistors. The PS4 has 8GB too, and since when are we doing transistor counts? Who cares?

- You can talk to it to turn it on. Stop being lazy.

- You can tell it to switch between movies, TV, games and music in under 2 seconds Who needs to be able to switch between them all that quickly? NO ONE. Just go to the home menu and load up the next activity. All you've really done is cut out 5 seconds of time for switching between activities, who cares?

- ESPN programs are interactive and you can call up a player's stats. WHO THE HELL CARES?! You'll use it to show your friends once, think it's rad, and then never use it again.

- Our new CoD game isn't Modern Warfare of Black Ops, it's NEW! It's called GHOST!! So? Doesn't mean it's not going to be so blatantly the same as Black Ops was to the Modern Warfare series.

- Graphics are gonna be dope! Yeah, same with the PS4 bro. Still won't be a PC.

- The closer you get to something, the higher quality it gets!! This has been happening for YEARS.

- We put in cool AI so fish scatter when you get close! SO WHAT.

- You can customize your gear (oh, you mean like the previous games?)

- It's gonna be the most beautiful CoD yet! Yeah, because it's newer you dumbass.

- New engine will allow higher texture resolutions. WHOA. NO ONE SAW THAT COMING. >.>

- "Boosted polycount" Oh right. Because that's new. That has never happened before.

- We mo-capped our attack dogs now! Right, because everyone will noticed how much better the animations are in the 0.3 seconds you have before the dog is on top of you

- They distracted the utter shitiness of their Xbox by saying LOOK OVER HERE!! HALO TV SERIES WITH SPIELBERG!! Oh yeah, no he's not directing... just producing.

- It's going to be available this year!!! Who cares, so is the PS4.

- They didn't even acknowledge the rumor of Microsoft putting in anti-used game measures and restrictions, pretty much confirming that rumor. With something that devastating to their entire market you'd think they would shut down that rumor right away. They've had journalists and and press HOUNDING them asking this question to them POINT BLANK and they haven't said a SINGLE WORD. FORBES HAS ASKED THEM. NOT JUST STUPID TWEETS TO MICROSOFT. Not a word. I think this pretty much ensures that there will be some sort of connecting the game to the console so you can't resell the game. That's just my opinion, but at the very least we can all agree that was a terrible marketing strategy to NOT address the rumors. EDIT: It's been confirmed.

AND FINALLY. LASTLY. TO SUM IT ALL UP:

THEY SHOWED LESS THAN 2 MINUTES OF ACTUAL IN-GAME FOOTAGE FROM ANY GAME. ANY GOD DAMN GAME.

I remember when video game systems were about video games.

I disagree, them not saying anything is probably the best response on their part. But otherwise yeah, the points you've summed up are pretty much why I think this is rubbish.

EDIT: noteworthy: also PS4 uses GDDR5 RAM, which PCs don't even use yet (they use GDDR3 RAM, same as Xbox One). So uh...right, something something transistors something something

Howso? You mean answering the rumor would put them in an awkward position with used game stores? They're gonna have to do so eventually anyways. Oh yeah, and they've confirmed it now, it's not just speculation.

Very true, but to be somewhat nice to Microsoft, PC's will be using DDR5 (or possibly better) near the end of this console's generation... but that's obvious and has happened before.

Bitter much?

I'm not sure why you keep comparing it to what the PS4 has. They didn't know what they PS4 was going to have when making this, so why would you give them crap for not doing it different or "better" than the PS4?

Talking to a device does not make you lazy. It's just another way to access the console, just like using a controller is. You're still sitting on your butt when using a controller.

They made it switch fast because why would you want it to be slow? That's like saying you don't care how long it takes for a window to open on your PC. It could take as long as it wants?

The COD announcement had nothing to do with the Xbox announcement, so when they were talking about graphics, it goes for all platforms. How you can you not think that all that graphics stuff is cool? Seriously? What games do you play? Minecraft? The dog AI is for the character in the campaign, not the attack dogs like in previous games. There was no character customization in any other COD, what are you talking about?

I still don't understand why everyone here is always so cynical with every freaking thing.

XBOX One confirmed to require an internet connection in order to work as seen in the fine print at the bottom of this page:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xboxone/meet-xbox-one

Features and requirements are under development and may change prior to release. Available features and content may vary by country. Broadband internet (ISP fees apply) and advanced TV hardware required. Games sold separately.

Whatever the hell "advanced TV hardware" is, I have no clue.

Try 3 months worth of time, and then some, as they still haven't (to my knowledge) shown a real copy of the machine yet, just renders of what it looks like.

I can agree with this notion. However talking isn't exactly a reliable form of accessing the console, because background noise, etc etc etc

What practical purpose does switching to Netflix to watch a movie while waiting on a game serve? Are people really that ADHD that they need to do something while a game loads or is waiting on something? Seriously?

I care more about gameplay than I do about graphics. Lots of people care about gameplay. That's what made Notch into a millionaire, so I assume that lots of people care more about gameplay than silly graphics enhancements. Why do you think indie games are becoming popular? Because people are waking up and realizing that there's more to a game than OOOO SHINY GRAFIX.

Also, there was character customization in Black Ops 1/2 to my knowledge (1 for sure had the ability to customize face paint and outfit for different teams), and customizing your loadout is sorta part of the whole character customization thing.

I like good things, not bad things. Xbox One bad, PS4 good.

Then don't use that feature if there's background noise. It's an option, not an obligation.

I didn't see this part of the presentation, but I'm sure it's meant to be how fast it switches to an app in general, not how fast it does it back to back. Because right now, opening an app on an Xbox is painfully slow. I think they are making a point that it's much faster now.

I guess this is how the CoD announcement did sorta coincide with the Xbox announcement. They probably had to keep it related to things that the new Xbox would allow, like the new engine. They featured some small gameplay changes, just not very many. I too, like hearing about gameplay changes and improvements, but they chose not to highlight those yet. That's fine with me, I'm sure they will sometimes later in the summer like usual.

Black Ops featured face paint but that was it. The only other customization that it had, along with every other CoD, is custom weapon camo. But even that was limited. The character changed to whatever perk you had in BO1. So if you had the Ghost perk, you looked like a ghillie sniper, so on. But with every other CoD game, it was whatever gun you had as your primary. There's really no other customization.

I like good things, not bad things. Xbox One bad, PS4 good.

See, that's an opinion. Which is fine. I might agree with you to an extent. Then again, neither of us have even used these devices yet.

In that regard, yeah, pretty much. Though I do feel that a lot of the general look was based off of PS4 if you ask me.

Frankly, they should be spending their time on other things, but that's just me. I felt like they really focused on stuff that isn't important to gamers, like these voice gimmicks, Kinect and so forth.

Hm, I thought it had to do with its ability to multitask. They explicitly mentioned that players would be able to "watch a movie or television show on Netflix while a game lobby is being prepared" or something to that effect. Which made me wonder, what game takes so long to prepare a game lobby that you can do that, or, what television show is that short?

I think I'm liking the changes in Ghost honestly a lot more than any other games, but it really feels like people are focusing on the graphics.

Quake 3 is often praised for its high amount of customization in the game, down to stuff like your Railgun projectile color (which I don't think any other game has come anywhere close to how cool that is, really). I think based on that, it'll get a good amount of praise.

They said their goal for Xbox One was to stretch their horizon to places other than video games. They claim that since the Xbox has expanded into other realms like TV shows and movies and apps, it should now be considered a "living room experience" rather than the once held title: "gaming experience".

You make good points though.

I advise people read this article on Wired:

It's a good layout as to what's going on, and the video on Kinect is impressive, you can't deny that.

Oh, I just saw that Raven is once again helping out Infinity Ward develop CoD: Ghosts. They helped with Modern Warfare 3 too.

They pushed back their reveal conference after the PS4 reveal. I think it's evident they tried to match what Sony did with some features on the PS4. For example, they talked about the DVR feature allowing you to record and share gameplay footage on the fly, which Sony has as a part of their "Share" button. How do I know they copied it? Well, the fact that they mentioned it just once, and showed a STILL picture of it and nothing more says to me that it's not finished. They probably just said "Hey devs, can you do this too?" "Uh, yeah sure, why not." "Cool get it done!"

Talking to a device does not make you lazy. It's just another way to access the console, just like using a controller is. You're still sitting on your butt when using a controller.

No it doesn't make you lazy. I was saying they presented it like this feature that's going to revolutionize the industry. If you feel that it makes a giant difference over every other console though, I do find that lazy.

They made it switch fast because why would you want it to be slow? That's like saying you don't care how long it takes for a window to open on your PC. It could take as long as it wants?

You say that is if it's slow currently. It takes me 7 seconds (yes I tried) to go from gaming, to Netflix, or to music, or to a DVD on my PS3. The Xbox One takes about 1-1.5 seconds. Yes that's a lot faster, but how much does that matter? They demonstrated switching about a dozen times back to back as if that's something people actually do. Yes, I would love to watch 1 second of everything going on in my console. =/ Again, I'm not complaining that it's fast, I'm complaining that all these little things they have they treat like it's a big deal and countless times use the words "ground breaking" and "revolutionary".

It had everything to do with the Xbox announcement. Not only was it an Xbox conference but the game was also said to have exclusive content on the Xbox One version. They're using it to sell the system, how can you say they aren't related? Yes, the graphics references go far all systems, doesn't mean it's not bullshit. Again, they're presenting all these extremely small, mostly pointless items and claiming they are revolutionary. I'm not saying those things aren't cool, I'm saying they ARE NOT NEW OR UNEXPECTED. They are either stuff we all knew was coming (higher polycount and texture resolution, things that ALWAYS come with new hardware) or stuff that's been going on for years (increased detail the closer you get). Again, the issue is not the content, it's that they present it in a way that makes it seem like it's revolutionizing the industry and that you can only get these things with the Xbox One.

I still don't understand why everyone here is always so cynical with every freaking thing.

Try realistic. I think you're extremely optimistic if you think there's anything revolutionary to be had that's exclusive to the console as of now.

I never said I thought they were making anything revolutionary to it. Sure, some of the features seem pointless, but little things add up. If they didn't talk about them at all, then were we to just assume those things? If they presented it in such an exaggerated way as you claim, then I agree, that is quite silly, but maybe it was to get the audience more excited about it.

You may be right about they waited to see what the PS4 had, but I think that's a good thing. The console wars (or any other product) are always like this. Competition is good for us consumers, that's for sure.

And yeah, THE MOST STUPID thing on this 'presentation' is that there weren't any true gameplay videos, only ~2 min of CoD Ghost. And the Ghost is on the same old idTech. Bullshit.

Hmm....it's a given that any "Xbox" can play games....this console is doing something that's new, and that's the integration of entertainment. The PS3 and PSP both tried that with little success. PC had done this, but remains expensive to the average person. It's a GIVEN that the Xbox One can play games. The true purpose of that reveal is to demonstrate the integration features that the One brings to the table. Gameplay is, and will be reserved when E3 comes along. That was promised by the Xbox Team; Gameplay capability would be demonstrated at E3 at it's fullest potential. This is a teaser for things to come. Now quit bitching and wait for E3, then you can truly bitch and complain.

I shall break the rules of internet properness to bring up a more detailed pro and con of Xbox One....with logical input...

Pros

  • Integrates entertainment into one powerful platform, and from the looks of things, seems to do this flawlessly
  • The ability to do two things at once ON A CONSOLE is a great idea, gives console players the benefits of PC gaming...on a console
  • Obviously, the processing power....everyone bitches about just the RAM thing...they forget that it has a very powerful processor that if I'm not mistaken, is more powerful than what the PS4 has.
  • Xbox One actually exists in the tech flesh....not just a blurred trailer like what we got for the PS4
  • Despite everyone saying that it can't play used games...Major Nelson stated that it can, and most likely will, due to retail complaints
  • Opens up the opportunity for more app integration, meaning more multimedia capability can be brought to consoles.
  • Still going to be cheaper than a Gaming PC

Cons

  • Will most likely be more expensive than the PS4 (guess)
  • Although it doesn't require to be "always online", you can't play offline forever
  • Possibility that games will be more "on demand" rather than retail...something the PSP Go did with epic failure.
  • Uh...EA is going to fuck something up...I`m sure of it.
  • The controller is bulky looking..here`s hoping it`s lightweight
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts.....fuck no

There you go....now can we please stop arguing and lashing out at people like mindless children...
