Winrar can make zip files.

You would be surprised at how many people can't open rar files, I think sticking with zip files is fine, as all platforms can open it by default.

The current zip implementation will remain the only way for pk3s, anything else will just confuse the shit out of the filesystem.  And its not portable with other stuff that reads pk3s like radiant and q3map2, and probably some other tools.

minizip is the library that the game uses to handle the ZIP/PK3 format.

ZIP files don't require a third party application to open on any Windows, Mac, or Linux. RAR, 7zip, or any others do. A lot of non-modders may not have a program to open them, and shouldn't need to give an effort to use a file that we provide.

 

You can submit a RAR file from an external host, but we will convert it to ZIP anyway.
