You argue that this is not good for new/outside players, but a new player getting beaten to a bloody pulp by more veteran players with no way of protecting themselves is the main reason why that laming rule became popular to begin with. JKA is a highly skill oriented game, and new players just don't stand a fucking chance.

Im not going to argue for the laming rule to go away. It never will.

Although almost any other game you are thrown in with players and you learn from your failures. True, some games now have matchmaking that helps you get matched up against new players but I'd say the vast majority of games your thrown in at the deep end.  So, not sure this is a great reason for the laming rule.

I had a look at the origins of the word as I was around the time it became a thing in JK2. Funnily enough I apparently contributed to a wiki article about the laming rule on here about 8 years ago.

I distinctively remember Shroomduck coming up with idea at least which has stuck with me. Although I didnt really interact with him until later.

"I never invented the word 'laming'. If I had of come up with a name for the act back when the LiCk server was in full swing, it would have been something cooler sounding like "Prunger" or "Tstastrami". I did try to get "Asshat" as a name, but to no avail! Heheh. The big difference between what I started, and what other clans emulated, is that I had a single philosophy: That the fun of one should not be at the expense of another. Of course, this ideal was perverted and distorted by the MANY admins who sought only to control others and pander to their own weak sense of self esteem."

"It certainly wasn't me by myself. [LiCk]Calvin and I formed a single rule "Saber up to attack", as a way of creating more freedom for players of JK2 on the LiCk server. What facinated us at the time (and this is like, the day JK2 came out!), was how social people were in this game as opposed to other games. Instead of the normal "shoot anything that moves" that one finds in most MP games, JK2 created a certain environment which promoted more chat and communication. We were really both stunned the first time we saw two people start to duel each other, and bow (crouch!) before starting. There was something magical about something as simple as that at the time... although most of us take it for granted now.

So, the rule was really created to help promote what was already evolving in the game. We were QUITE disappointed when we saw other servers doing the same thing, but using it as an excuse to weild their admin power around. This is likely one of the reasons people 'lame' so much today... they are sick of admins and servers telling them what to do, and understandably so!

That's why the whole thing I try to instill in our admins is a sense of respect towards ALL players as opposed to just enforcing the law. There's a big difference between the words of the rules and the spirit of the rules. The spirit is what will carry us forward and keep this game magical while it's still alive."

So I'd say @Aldro Koon Your ethos is more in line with what was meant to begin with then what it has turned into. i.e. That the fun of one should not be at the expense of another.

Its a tough one though. Because any other game 'owning' people is part of what makes the games fun.

  2. Another thread encouraging debate!

This is probably one of my biggest gripes with JKA. People get banned far too easily. In a way I feel that it is damaging to the JK community.

One of the most common reasons for bans is laming. Now, should people be getting a permanent ban for laming? I dont think so.

Its important to understand that JKA is a very unique game. I am struggling to think of a single game in which running up to someone and killing them could result in a ban. In almost every game it is a non issue.  I personally feel this rule has helped in the facilatation of the reduction of the JKA playerbase. For example see it from a new persons perspective. They join the game and naturally want to saber someone. They suddendly either get immobilised by admin powers that are probably a little too much fun to use. Then get told how to play by someone who is supposed to be a equal to them. Yet they have far more powers.  No one likes being told what to do while gaming so they rebel a little and as a result get banned.

Another popular reason for banning is 'trolling' This can take many forms some malicious some mainly just  messing about.  Again someone just  messing about gets banned for doing something relatively minor. I dont feel this encourages people to stick around and be part of the community.

I feel that the few active servers need to acknowledge the power they have. It's simply not the choice anymore that you can just join another server if you get banned. The choice of servers is extremely limited. Banning should be a last resort and not the first option.

Lastly, the range ban. This in my view is deeply damaging.  A range ban should be used as a last resort mainly to stop exploiters or racists or someone who is deeply ruining the gameplay on the server in a negative way and avoiding bans.

Now, I know the main argument is well it is your server you can do what you want. That is 100% true. But, I think bans should be a last resort and the length of the bans more appropriate to the manner of the offence.  As much as possible we should encourage people to stick around even if at times they can be annoying.

That's my 2cents on banning. Feel free to rip me to shreds.

Another lil side note. I feel like the amount of empty servers with just bots is at times damaging to the community as well. New players often do not know they are even playing with bots. Thanks to certain modders who thought it was a good idea to give bots a ping.  I have on quite a few occasions join a server just to see a new player who is playing with bots and trying to talk to them.  I know not much can be done about this but I do think the issue of empty servers  and dead servers is a bit damaging to the community as it makes it difficult for new players to join active servers.

    One last lil side note:

I think it would be could if more welcome messages just said "Press Y to talk"   It is a minor thing but more servers should do it.

It's a completely different thing with maps. In most cases, they have to be decompiled in order to access the source files, with the downside of having the textures scrambled and losing several scripts. Only very few authors have released the source files for their own maps. But at least we have some source files, such as the ones that come with GtkRadiant.

Ye, I think its mainly targeted at Mappers. Because it is quite rare to see mappers release their source files. Which is a shame.

I'd also say that if a mod is dead. Consider releasing the project anyway. The amount of amazing mods that have been developed but never made it is countless. The majority of the time the developers never release the stuff they did make which is a pity.

In the end it is down to the individual but I think it could benefit the community.

  4. Thought I'd try to liven up the forum a bit with a debate.

I personally think JKA modders should be more willing to release their source code / map files / models to the wider community.

Why, I think plagiarism if you can call it that in JKA is not the issue it used to be. I also think a lot of fantastic modders have made amazing stuff but they have not shown anyone else how to do it. So as a result, stuff doesnt get built on and improved and tweaked with.

I personally, learn best by seeing how someone else has done something. I'm sure many others do as well. Being able how to see a creator has made a strafe map then making your own is such a good way to learn. That's a poor example but I think you get the idea.

I think the biggest issue for new modders at the moment is the lack of knowledge because a lot of the resources and guides have long since died. Players being able to mess about with other players creations is just a fantastic way to learn.

Also, I remember when KOTF first came out. If I remember right, it was some turkish dude who basically stiched up a lot of other peoples mods and created KOTF out of it. At the time there was outcry. I disagreed with it as well. But now I think about it... The harm was minimal and I think KOTF brought new players into the community.

That's my take anyway, I could of thought this out more but I thought I'd just throw this out there.  I'd also acknowledge that alot of JKA projects are now on github which is fantastic.  I think more creators should be willing to release their project files either for learning or for personal use.

I know that one fan has attempted to remake the game on a modern engine, until the project was shut down. But now that Lucasfilm Games is revived, I think that a Jedi Outcast remake isn't that unlikely anymore.

With the amount of remasters and remakes its only a matter of time. That being said, chances of there being dedicated servers seems slime.

Also there will have to be a store in it with micro-transactions lol. 💩

  6. I dont think it is wishful.

The guys making it are the same guys who made the division 1 and 2 games.

They are using the same game engine as well Snowdrop engine.

Im hoping it will just be like the division 2 in the star wars universe. Like you can team up with a squad in an open world and just explore and do quests. Be a bit like Kotor online. I imagine that would have many opportunities for clans to thrive as well.

The biggest issue is Jedi though. It is always a struggling implenting Jedi with other classes without them breaking the game. I think the only game that has ever done that right is Star Wars Galaxies pre nerf.

You could argue swtor did it right but the problem with swtor is that everyone is basically a jedi. Which detracts from the feeling the being a jedi/sith is special. Also the game is balanced so a trooper could kill a jedi in a 1v1 which is just not right.

    Idk thats my rambling.

Problem is that ours is and we probably have to ban this client if it (in theory) is widespread lol.

I thought your server had a feature that removes clients if they are inactive after a certain amount of time? Might of been another server, cant remember.

Also will I get banned for killing the app bots 😛

    @ent

You considered making a standalone windows version? I bet quite a few would use it considering Jedi Academy is basically a chat app in itself right now for many people. 😛

    No, there isn't, unfortunately.

Could be doable with some serverside modications. Tricking the servers to not see players who connect via the app as not actual players.  I'd imagine you'd run into so many issues with that though. For example not sure if there would be any networking hardlimits to having loads of people connecting.

Another option is to have people connect via Rcon with only the ability to see chat messages and send messages.  But  more issues there as well.

Another option. Have one 'master' client connect to the server. Who can read all the messages relay it back to the app.  Then people on the app can send chat through the single APP bot.  With a simple script to attach a unique indentifer to each message.

    e.g.

Appbot: Rogers says    I dont like toads

Appbot: Leeroy says     I like toads

I dunno just spit balling.  To be honest most servers are not even active enough for this to be a issue .

It looks good though, I'll check it out in a bit.

  9. Ye it was great.

I'm definately giving cgi luke a pass because it was good. Yea, if you slow it down and look at his lips its a bit iffy but still fantastic. Also he needed a scene like this because in the Last Jedi they butchered him. This is what everyone feels that Luke should be,  a jedi with immense power. All we got in the TLJ was a force ghost fight.

What I really wished for though, was for Boba Fett to be on that bridge when Luke entered. That would of been epic.

I agree with the voice as well. It is very subtle buf he actually sounds more mature as well. Like he is no longer learning the force but is a Jedi Master.

I'm sure Jawa will take you back if you try. They have been banning me for years and somehow still let me play on their servers.

Positive mindset is the best attitude to have although I know it is not easy. Don't let yourself get into a cycle of self-hatred.

Your maps are awesome and many people like myself who has no idea who you are has had tons of fun playing them.  So you have brought a lot of fun into the world. That is more than I can claim or most people in fact.

  11. Taspir.

There are a few issues with it. Mainly the mountains.  They are really lacking in polygons.

Other than that though the centralised design of it is really impressive. It's designed in a really good way for large scale ffas. Which is one of my biggest critcisms of Tatooine City although it is very popular some of the most open areas of the maps that would be good for ffas are filled with vehicles that have no real use.

  12. Due to Bane killing all the Sith apart from himself; many of whom probably knew some of the secrets.

I think Disney will do something with Palpatine though. We lack a decent movie that focuses on an 'evil' side person and I'm sure Disney will rectify that.

I hated the last part of ROTJ.. his death (if he is dead) deserved to be a lot more epic. We never really got to see his true power just how he used his power to influence the galaxy.

Also Bane and Plagueis both knew how to cheat death although both supposedly never truly succeeded. As far as I am aware that is canon so  if anyone could come back I think it could well be him.

  13. I remember very little about the JKA/JK2 engine but with the use of modern game engines it shouldn't be too hard to recreate a JKA like experience.

Problem is the JKA graphics have aged quite well so I doubt anyone will play it just for better graphics.

Also I wouldn't like a 128 player server. I've always enjoyed 20+ players on a small map like taspin.

It would be a interesting project if it happened though; I just suspect it will need to bring more to the table then shinier pixels.
