They are ported and we denied them. Your passive aggressive attitude is seriously beginning to piss me off, Oobah. Thread locked and warning issued.

New Canon Star Wars character
eezstreet replied to Daedra's topic in Star Wars Franchise Discussions
I could care less about who's behind the armor. The problem is that we're not meant to care. They're soulless, power-armored badasses who take orders from none but the Empire, a cold and robotic machine by nature. I'll spare my judgment about Disney's retcons and changes until the actual film releases. We all know how tacky Star Wars novelists in particular can be. -
New Canon Star Wars character

You're right. The Imperial fleet is meant to be analagous to the Nazis - right down to the Stormtroopers. The sleek black outfits of the Imperial officers has a similar look to the SS, and Darth Vader's cape is an obvious nod to Hitler, who is well-known to wear a black cape. The weapons used as bases for the props make this even more obvious. Why do you think they chose a Mauser C96 for the DL-44? It therefore seems strange to put a woman in this role. I'm all about female empowerment, but it's jeopardizing the original point of The Empire. -

I don't think "girl on girl" or sex at all belongs in Star Wars. That's just my two cents. Hopefully the writer does this tactfully and make her a character who just happens to be lesbian, and not "the" lesbian. -

Source Engine 2 released and free -
eezstreet replied to CrimsonStrife's topic in Art, Media & Technology
If I don't get the job at Raven, I will port Rapture to Source 2, since there's literally no reason not to at this point. No extra costs, the only requirement being that I need to put it on Steam - a platform which I already decided was my base platform - and what I suspect will be a very clean codebase, all of which will be compatible with OpenGL, DirectX and Vulkan...there's no reason why I wouldn't do this. Valve technology has always been the simplest, cleanest and yet most robust tech out there, but there have been barriers to entry with regards to cost. It's now the cheapest engine out there for my specific project. I've also been tinkering with Fallout/Tale of Two Wastelands to see how Gamebyro deals with RPG elements, and I quite like some concepts in use there (form lists, quest management, etc), so I might wind up taking some design cues from there. -
Generally, we argue that if it's not 100% ported (as in, you change the sounds or the textures or something, so that's alright) then you're most likely fine. This does not cover re-mirrors or uploads, which require permission from the original author. That being said, by uploading a file, it's your responsibility and JKH isn't liable if a third party sends a DCMA notice- we act the same way as DeviantArt does in this regard.

UE4 - If you love something, set it free
eezstreet replied to CrimsonStrife's topic in Art, Media & Technology
I picked my wording there carefully for a reason. Paying for software access is a completely different matter. Nobody is going to pay money for a subscription that amounts to patches for the game. If it's an MMO and you're required to pay a subscription for basic access, then yes, people will pay for it. Totally different concepts. -
UE4 - If you love something, set it free
eezstreet replied to CrimsonStrife's topic in Art, Media & Technology
This is the point I was trying to make. Nobody wanted the subscription model, hence why they got rid of it. Subscriptions aren't sustainable business models when it comes to software updates. That's exactly why Adobe and Microsoft don't follow this model. CryTek just follows trends and doesn't really think for itself, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went the same route as Epic. Also I highly doubt that this was Epic's idea all along @@CrimsonStrife, otherwise they wouldn't be giving out refunds. -
Second interview came and went. No news really to report, other than 500 people actually applied for the job.

UE4 - If you love something, set it free
eezstreet replied to CrimsonStrife's topic in Art, Media & Technology
Yeah but it's a bad/unsustainable business model, considering very few ever want the bleeding edge version and will readily update their code every time a new version comes out. It's low maintenance for small projects to pull/merge, but with large projects (like something out of EA) I can't see why they would honestly want to pay every month for something they don't need. Subscription-pay models for software updates* is never a sustainable business model. Neither the end user nor project managers care if the version is up to date, unless there's a major stability problem (which also has lots of nasty side effects for the company..) -

Remember when I said that them making it a subscription service was a stupid idea? Now who looks stupid? @@Xycaleth @@ensiform -
We have an unofficial IRC channel. irc.arloria.net / #JKHub Why not also pop into #JACoders or #jkgalaxies as well? I don't think we're going to implement a chat any time soon. It'd be a pain to try and moderate, also anti-spam measures would need to be considered.

It's on hold, and I'm more or less giving @@redsaurus the keys to the kingdom as his SP stuff for JKA implements everything I did, sans the extra lines of dialogue and JK2-specific fixes which I made by hand. Unfortunately I don't have any of the hand-fixes to the maps anymore due to two hard drives failing almost simultaneously. These fixes are easy to make- if I told @@therfiles what to do, he could probably implement them in .IBI scripts. However, I'm still very much interested in getting my JK2 restoration completed, and with glNext coming out soon, I want to take the time to learn graphics programming proper. Being part of Raven will allow me to take a look at the design flow (hopefully..) of JK2 and see if there's more missing.* I'm already aware of a few things after reexamining some old PR stuff circa 2000 that I could implement. So...while I have interest, I'd be devoted 101% to my job and getting myself a permanent position. But if anyone wants to be my lackey and make changes to .npcs, .IBIs, .bsps, ..., feel free to sign up!

I'm getting another interview next week. I'll be interviewed by the same person as well as the project head.

If you've got an HD TV (read: Anything made after 2005 or so) you can use a VGA or DVI cable to turn your television into a second screen. Cheap and easy alternative, provided you've got everything. From there, you can reinstall Windows or whatever. If you need to get the data off, just pull out the hard drive. I'm assuming it's a laptop? Should be a panel somewhere that you can open and pop out the hard drive.

Well, hopefully in a few days I'll be receiving an offer. I've made the decision that it's worth leaving mid-semester to go up. Since I know several of the people working there and they can vouch for me, it "puts [me] in a unique position." I'm hoping that "unique position" = pole position. The contract is for a year of temp work. If that goes smoothly, another year and a half. Depending on projects, I could move up. I'm fairly confident that Raven won't be working on CoD for forever, so yeah.

Greetings. If you haven't quite figured this out yet, I'm eezstreet and I'm one of the two administrators of the site here (the other one being @@Circa). I'm also a coder, and one of the key people involved with (or formerly involved with) OpenJK and Jedi Knight Galaxies. I've also had a large burden to bear, as I've been the de-facto communicator with Raven Software, the developer of both JK2 and JKA. When Lucasarts shut down, it was I who communicated with Raven on releasing the source code, and I was the first to have the source in my possession. It was I who established a line of contact between Kotaku's Luke Plunkett and Raven's Matt Gummelt for a very widely-publicized interview as the source code was being released. My tenure here at JKHub has been a bit interesting. I was a huge asshole in my past, and for that I apologized before, and I'll apologize again. While I've been here, I've put pressure on improving relations with the competitive community and helped doctor sweeping changes to the frankensteining and porting policies. Admittedly, I haven't been as actively involved with the community recently as I was once, but I have important reasons for this. In addition to school and a small web design job putting me with little time, I've also had relationships come and go, and a slew of my own personal problems. I hate to talk about myself too much, so I'll get right to the point. A few weeks ago, I applied for three jobs at Raven Software, one of them being a QA testing position. The people I've met in the past at Raven helped put in a good word for me, and this made a considerable impression on the interviewer. I discussed several mods which I worked on in the past, as well as some other projects (the interviewer had heard of OpenJK, so that made for an interesting bit of conversation). One of the things that struck me as being different from other interviews is that they talked to me about what games that I played. I've been interviewed a few times by different software companies, and it was fairly atypical to say the least. I think I pretty much fucking nailed it though. This has put me at an interesting crossroads though. They need people as soon as possible, possibly within the next month, but I'm still in school for the moment. There's a wide variety of different things that could happen at this point- either a better candidate could roll around (not too too likely), they may need me like...now, or they would be willing to wait until May. If I am needed in March, I'll have to drop from university and move to Madison. Obviously, that's a bit risky, but there's a good payoff: I'm willing to bet that their next game (I wasn't told what it would be) is Call of Duty, and having CoD on your resume is golden. Plus, I kinda have a soft spot for Ravensoft. Whatever happens, if I'm hired by them and move up to Wisconsin, I can no longer continue my tenure as staff, as I need to devote 101% of my resources towards my career, hoping to move beyond QA testing, but realizing that by proving my worth, I can insure a permanent position in the company. tl;dr- I might be retiring from the staff soon. I'll keep everyone posted.
