Background Contest #2 - For Real this Time!

Hello everyone. The staff has been a bit busy and unfortunately our new background contest fell to the limelight. We regret the mistakes that were made with this background contest, so we are now officially reviving it! Here are the details of this contest:

"After the recent success of the JKHub Holiday Competition, and much staff discussion, we have started a new competition. This time, it will be something a little bit different. Instead of focusing on something designed with the game in mind, we will be focusing on screenshots. Originally, JKHub used a picture of the level t1_fatal. We hosted a screenshot competition in 2014, two years after JKHub was opened to the public, and the current background is the winner of this competition.

Fast forward to today. JKHub is turning four years old this year, and we haven't had a background change in several years. We need something new to keep the site fresh. So, we are announcing our second official Background Contest. The winning entry of this contest will become the new background for JKHub. Here are the official rules of this competition:

  • The art must be submitted by May 25th, 2016. Winners will be determined over a week-long voting period.
  • Winners will be determined via a voting system similar to the Holiday Competition.
  • Artwork must be a minimum of 1900x1200 pixels in size. The larger, the better! Ideally, your work should look good on all resolutions.
  • Screenshots must depict content which is only available in the base game, or official Raven Map Packs. Hand-made artwork / concept art is also acceptable.
  • Screenshots may be of content in JK2 or JKA only. Submitted artwork must be related to JK in some way.
  • You may submit up to 3 pieces of content for this competition.

But you may be wondering, why would we hold a competition to change a part of the website, when the prospect of a JKHub 2.0 is looming? In truth, it will take a while to develop JKHub 2.0, even after the software we need becomes available. In the meantime, some small improvements to the website and minor changes, such as the background, will be enough to keep the site fresh while we all wait for JKHub 2.0. More details and information about JKHub 2.0 will be given as we learn more. We are constantly tweaking the website, and continue to evaluate new options to engage the community, in order to bring everyone together."

This time around, the submissions will be taken from replies to this topic. The other topics will be locked.

Those are really nice. The blurring might be a bit overdone though.

I was just playing MB2 cloudcity, although I believe that is a great entry it doesn't fall under the line as just strictly Jka right? If it does then I should be taking tons more pics XD

Base JK2 or JKA only, yes. Unless you can convince @@eezstreet otherwise. :P

it looks like you've taken a screenshot then scaled it up (then blurred). The shots themselves are nice but the quality I'm not a fan of

Try jaMME. It can record in resolutions greater than you your monitor is (demolist), so you can use that to take a screenshot.

Thought I'd at least give it a go :). Can get higher res if needed.

Hi

When I take my screenshots in JAMME, they do not look so high-def and the size resolution is 640 x 480.

How do you make your screenshots high-res with the appropriate size resolutions?

Thanks

Love the cantina one :)

I'm picking this one.. It's a good, high-res image and the map looks VERY high quality. It also emphasizes and encourages people's high-quality work on the forum/site.

The forum for the background contest has been created. The voting for the background contest will start on June 1st and conclude on June 17th. Good luck to all! We had a good number of people participate in this contest as well.

Two things I want to suggest:

Could you please hide the voting results until the voting phase is over? Is that possible? People tend to pick up other peoples opinion, by seeing the current result.

People can only vote if they are members since May or something like that. (Not sure if that's common in this forum, actually I doubt it, but I have seen a lot of contests where people created some fake accounts to vote for themselves)

To all the people participating in this contest. May the force be with you.

P.S.: For sportsmanship I wont vote for my own submission. I hope other people will do the same.

People can't see the voting results unless they've voted or have opted to see the results.

There's requirements in place like what you describe though. People can't vote unless they've contributed to the community in some way (not in terms of content uploaded, but other ways).

A few of them are really bright. Even though my favorite is a bright looking one, people need to keep in mind that a bright background can be stressful for the eyes

Ok, never experienced that before. Even on websites with white background. But if it affects somebody, we should really consider leaving the bright ones out or tone them down. (even if that includes my submission :( )

I don't see many that are bright enough to be brighter than the other elements on this site (mostly white or light greyish blue).

For what it's worth, we will probably have multiple theme options in the future to help with this sort of thing.

I actually installed a plugin to make facebook and youtube mostly black. But yea, since most of the page is covered by forum elements and widgets it should be okay. Just wanted to point that out
