  1. @@Kualan I hate to change sides so quickly, but those are some excellent points you made.  If they don't have a problem with people making fanfilms uses sounds and music, I don't see why they would have a problem with a game mod that does the same.  You're completely right about game studios making those models, those are the property of those game studios and are not SW affiliated so I guess that completely rules out porting models in this discussion.

I should bring up that there are some mods that rip from places other than SW, since there's a probably a few mods also that rip from non-SW games and movies.  I guess those would be unacceptable unless they have a similar stance to that of SW.

  2. But suddenly models aren't okay either? I fail to see what makes sounds so different from models in that regard.

I'm not arguing that we shouldn't allow new mods with ported sounds, I'm just pointing out a bit of inconsistency.

Don't worry, I agree with you.  It's just a dumb code of ethics that's adopted from jk3files, and I doubt the majority of the people here are willing to change from that view.  I'm not so much a model person but I think porting models is OK for education I guess because most of the time the ports are terrible anyway. The only time a model port pisses me off is when people try and pass it off as their own.

You're right though, we're already breaking the law ripping sounds and music, why should ripping models be any different?  If anyone finds out about how they let sounds and music through, they're going to act anyway.  Mods with ported material have existed for over a decade for this game, and it happens everywhere else for all other modded games. I haven't heard of anyone getting sued.  I've heard of mods - massive ones - that get C&D's but that's mostly due to potential profit loss. If JKHub really wants to be "ethical" and follow the law, at least three quarters of the files on this site would be removed but it is unnecessary because we've all been doing it for YEARS and nothing has happened.

  3. I think sound effects and voices from the movies are in the safe zone, a significant amount has been released on starwars.com if that's worth anything (someone took the time to organize the sounds and uploaded them here awhile ago, too)

Banning music might be a bad idea too, since a lot of the maps and major mods on here have SW music in them.  Just look at MB2, JKG, etc.  You could make a grandfather clause for those, but it would be really unfair to any newer projects that require music.  I personally don't have a problem with music mods so as long as you don't directly copy and paste entire soundtracks into a .pk3.

  4. Now you got me wondering, I'm working on getting Kain in game as we speak and I had planned on just using the voice recording sessions since there's no background noise to filter out but now I think it may keep my model from being hosted.

Wouldn't worry about it that much.  I think they'd realize that banning ripped sounds would effectively destroy the site.

  5. Since a lot of work goes into sound design, it's pretty much like ripping a model.  Not to mention maps that use music from the SW soundtracks, and its funny when people get mad about music packs or duel music mods when you can download every single map out there and practically get all of the SW soundtracks.

  6. Out of curiosity, what General Grievous model was ported/taken down? I had seen the New Vegas/Savage/Maul models on the Hub, but I thought the only Grievous that had been made for JKA was the Mars Marshall model.

The Grievous model that was taken down was ported from SWBF2, I believe it was uploaded by a guy named "grievous"

  7. Fairly certain once ep7 is out, we will see a lot more activity. Don't forget, Ep3 came out not long after JKA and can be held responsible for a lot of the activity.

It's possible, but it's also possible that the new Battlefront game will soak up most of the attention if it releases around that time (which I suspect) not to mention how many people JKA will lose to Battlefront.  I don't think JKA will get that much attention unless a LOT of modders band together to give this game a face-lift or when JKG is ready.  Even then, you'd need to advertise a bit.

  8. DUDE. I SAID THE BLUE VADER SKIN IN SOUL CALIBUR IV, DID YOU PAY ANY ATTENTION!? JESUS CHRIST

    Jk.

But no seriously, that isn't the Vader skin I was referring to at all. The one I'm talking about has blue, black and white colors, so... yeah, I'm not sure that meant much.

I think you just described the exact same Vader I posted under specific lighting conditions

Those face textures look awesome but he looks way healthier in those screenshots than he is portrayed in the movie.  By the end of episode VI he look's pretty freaking pathetic.

It might be weird to do something like that though because the shape of his face is different from the model you're using.

  10. When I first saw it, I thought it was expertly photosourced based on the modview pictures but the ingame screenshot looks pretty fantastic, especially the eye glow.  The only thing that bothers me is the shadows, but given the lighting on this game its understandable.

Is it just me or does regular vader with helmet on look a little too clean?  I think he ought to feel a little more gritty.

Vader's helmet is pretty damn shiney with the exception of IV which had a dull plastic look, and towards the end of VI where the helmet is a bit scratched up from the duel with Luke.  If he plans on doing a "worn" version it makes sense to do the "clean" one first.
