  1. Before I joined here, there was nothing more to JKA for me than the development and exercise of skill at sabering: Over my entire time with JKA that was the only thing I ever considered worthwhile, everything else was either drama or fluff (except for CTF of course, these guys rock). But ever since I joined here, I've come to respect the modding community, even if we do not share the same values and focus on completely different aspects of the game, and so I agree that the releases of some of the better mods were definitely milestones in JKA, but even so you must imagine how funny it is to me when people set out to compile a list of the most worthwhile moments in the history of the game and fill it mostly with release dates of mods. @@Circa: Wovian and aXiom 03.04.2005, UK vs GER JNC 2006 05.02.2006 for two; picking a third one, but not a fourth or fifth one is a bit more tricky for me.
  2. If I were to make a 'Gold Pack' celebrating JKA, I'd stuff it with replays of the most important and interesting competitive matches in the history of the game. But then again, high-level competitive play is all I really care about.
  3. For competitive milestones or significant events from within the competitive community, check out: http://jkhub.org/wiki/index.php?title=Competitive_Play There's really a lot that is hugely significant there, but if I were to pick the most important events, I'd pick those: Wovian vs aXiom in April 2005 (the first official high-level intercontinental match to be held), Ozone vs aXiom in October 2005 (marks the end of aXiom's dominance and the rise of Ozone), UK's win in the JNC 2006 vs the Germans (the brits officially eclipse the germans for the first time, which had dominated competitive JKA since release), Minneyar winning the ESL invite cup in 2006 (becomes a top5 player and stayed that way until his retirement sometime in 2010), Germany winning the JNC 2009 against team Alpine Regions (JNC 2009 was the most well attended event in years back then, plus the finals were amazing), Xentinels defeating aXiom in 2v2 and TDM in March 2010 (aXiom disbands shortly after that, other great clans including xentinels leave too, the hungarians take over competitive JKA)
  4. jax roris ~ chuck norris? wtf we're onto something here!
  5. his name is derived from jax, so of course he is a great ctf playing bot
  6. This question is really ambiguous. What does it mean to play x over a period of z years? When does a year or a month count as 'having played x in'? If I keep JKA installed for years, but don't play, or only play once a year, or play once a month, does that count as 'having played for x years'? Does it count if I stop playing the game in 2006, but then resume it in 2008 as 'having played it since 2006'? Does doing JKA related behind the scenes stuff (or even modding) without actually going ingame count as 'having played x'? I am really confused. EDIT: I guess OP's question is more a matter of "How long ago was the first time you played JKA?"
  7. If by 'in' you mean making people who are currently not playing competitive JKA more interested in doing so, then I seriously doubt it. If on the other hand you mean that it will spark interest from within the competitive community, i.e. that the guys who play JKA competitively will like it, then maybe: The developments surely won't interest them (in fact, they don't), the result might maybe, depending on the quality of the gameplay. What some people are trying to do with OpenJK, namely make a standalone competitive sabering game with its own assets and so on, has a really great advantage over mods of all kinds: It claims completely new grounds by disassociating itself from JKA, thus not being just another interpretation of some modder as to what JKA should be like, but rather a completely new game altogether - a take it or leave it kind of thing that exists outside of JKA. This is good and very interesting, seeing as mods are categorically to be rejected when it comes to competitive JKA, but whether it really turns out to be the promised land of competition will depend heavily on the quality of the game... and if you want my honest appraisal: So far it doesn't look all that great (sorry Hugo).
  8. Ah excellent, thanks for the explanation.
  9. So do you have to login from within the game or something? Or does it just pick up your name? I guess the latter is not the case, so I'm wondering how it handles player recognition. Yeah, they're now officially called gameplay features
  10. @@DarkPhazonDragon: Pssst, don't worry about CaptainCrazy saying that he'll block you. It's just a farce and he will respond to you all the same . Also, don't feed the troll, he really likes to lash out against people. As for me, if you don't intend to go around laming on servers anymore, then you're cool with me, but if all you want from the game is to ruin it for others, then I really think you should find a better pastime.
  11. @DarkPhazonDragon: If you want to roleplay the sith or a chaotic character from d&d then find yourself a RP server. Rules are there to make the game fun for everyone and by laming you become that one person who has to ruin the fun of others just for the sake of his own enjoyment. This sets you en par with the people that crash servers, DDoS sites or make inflamatory posts just to provoke a reaction - in short: people we would be better without. I for one do not welcome you back.
  12. Breaking rules for the sake of breaking them (or annoying other members) is something I do not approve of and if that's what you intend to do, then the community is better without you.
  13. I think we can all agree that the sabering is a tad little bit broken in many respects.
  14. In SP, walking is faster than jumping. WHAT IS THIS
  15. I guess that's fair enough.
  16. So you teach people on JA+ as well?
  17. Yeah I agree, it's actually really fun to replay those good old campaigns with a bunch of friends. The same goes for a lot of other (but of course not all) games, but JK2/JKA seems quite suitable for coop in general due to the way that the gameplay works; except that one would have to balance the maps a bit and make them more interesting for more than one player, i.e. add more enemies, slightly changed maps to accomodate more players and so on - akin to something that we have in svencoop for hl1 for example.
  18. To get back on topic, I used to play a lot of the sp ladder maps that the OP mentioned way back in the days and pretty much stuck with those for the longest of time until the release of JKA. I don't really like playing those anymore though, as I'm more of a MP person now, so my favourite mods for the SP campaigns are the ones that make the game look good, i.e. HD texture ones, and mods that make the gameplay of SP more akin to what we have in MP (especially for JKA, seeing as the movement in SP JKA feels really odd). EDIT: Although what I'd absolutely love to see would be SP maps that are truly optimized for coop play in MP.
  19. What mod are you playing on?
  20. But they're not silly like us, which makes them far less interesting. The drama and storylines that come with competitive play were probably the only reason I have played JKA for so long. There's nothing like the adrenaline rush of playing a really good game where a lot is at stake. It's also one of the major reasons I follow esports. JK2's storyline doesn't even come close in terms of entertainment value compared to watching or even playing a high-level match. Of course I'm not refering to making fun of some mouthy, inexperienced player for his allegedly unmeasurable amount of skill, which is really just a guilty pleasure of mine that I'm trying to shake.
