Is there more of Yoda's race or is he a one of a kind?

Obviously there's more of his kind since there's Yaddle in Episode I.

For current canon, only Yaddle is the other one of the species.

 

The EU has a bit more info. Another notable one is Master Vandar from KOTOR. There are a few in SWTOR as well.

Also it's quite strange that no where at all does it state what kind of species he is.

And yeah, George wanted the species to remain a mystery. Though I'm sure we'll learn more eventually, now that more and more official Star Wars content is being created.
