About This File

OpenJK is an effort by the JACoders group to maintain and improve the game engines on which the Jedi Academy (JA) and Jedi Outcast (JO) games run on, while maintaining full backwards compatibility with the existing games. This project does not attempt to rebalance or otherwise modify core gameplay.

Our aims are to:

  • Improve the stability of the engine by fixing bugs and improving performance.
  • Provide a clean base from which new JO and JA code modifications can be made.
  • Make available this engine to more operating systems. To date, we have releases on Windows, Linux and macOS.

The JKHub sub-forum is a better place for support queries, discussions, and feature requests. Bug reports and major issues should be posted in the Issues section on GitHub.

OpenJK is licensed under GPLv2 as free software. You are free to use, modify and redistribute OpenJK following the terms in LICENSE.txt.

Installation

To install OpenJK, you will first need Jedi Academy installed. If you don't already own the game you can buy it from online stores such as Steam or GOG.

Follow this guide for installing on all 3 desktop platforms.

I can't seem to get OpenJK to work on my PC.

It's downloaded and the files are Unzipped into a folder within "JediAcademy\GameData\", but OpenJK gives a crash report when double-clicked and nothing appears in the Mods menu in base JKA.

No other Mods are currently downloaded, and I've had "Movie Battles II" work perfectly fine before. Am I missing a part of the process?

If you followed my video tutorial, the instructions are slightly different than what was originally listed here - you may want to give that a try.  However, your comment is pretty old, did manage to get it fixed after all these months?

I've installed 2023-07-17 version of OpenJK, but when I launch SP mode and chose new game, an error message shows up after fininshing creating character says SV_SetUserinfo Bad index 970.

What does that mean and how can I solve this?

Make sure you aren't mixing different versions of OpenJK or other mods together, this usually means your DLL files aren't the right ones for the EXE.

Strange, I play well on my Desktop. But the problem happens on my Laptop, the game is newly installed.

Maybe I'll try re-download the OpenJK.

I've downloaded this version on my mac m1 - and it plays fine up until I complete the very first level. After that, it locks up when Luke is addressing the new recruits for the first time. Do you happen to know why this might be happening? Also, is there a way to make this full-screen?

Yes, it seems to be a strange problem with the M1 Macs loading so fast that the game doesn't have time to load the cutscene properly. We noticed if you add some large mods to slightly increase the load time, it usually solves it. A big one to try is the 4K texture pack. You can look through more of the "better visuals" section of our recommended mods to add some more. The bug has been reported, just not sure when it will be fixed by the OpenJK devs.

For fullscreen, there should be a setting in the setup menu to go into full screen. To use widescreen resolutions, you will probably need to use commands like this.

I'm glad, that the new builds remove certain limitations in game. Previously I had problem with a number of NPCs and a number of skins loaded per map in SP, and at a certain point together with this issue, the game would report "max_gamestate_chars exceeded" – a problem which isn't that often on complex maps, if a new build is installed.
