Star Wars Rebels (2014) Negative Criticism Thread
Cerez replied to Cerez's topic in Art, Media & Technology
Because posting negative remarks in the official Rebels thread would result in open conflicts between those who like the show and those who dislike it. I thought this would be obvious from our past experiences... -
You're right, @! That's a very good point! It seems Force crush/choke is almost as common as telekinesis among Jedi. (Maybe it's even related to it somehow?) However, it still happened without seeing the target, across a wall, which should imply that the killer was rather skilled with the Force, and Barriss didn't seem so skilled with it in her fights. She relied more on agility and tactical advantage than her Force powers. It may be that she killed Letta out of fear that she would talk, but my guess is that another, more experienced Dark Jedi was involved. Edit: I feel that somehow all this points back to Palpatine/Sidious. Listen to his speech again, and pay close attention to how he words the introduction to the trial. What happened, and the fact that a Jedi was involved helps build further distrust in the Jedi across the Republic, which serves the Sith cause. I don't think Barriss knew the full extent of what she was involved in. I think she may have been persuaded by someone to do what she did... and that someone wasn't Letta.

Star Wars Rebels (2014) Negative Criticism Thread
Cerez replied to Cerez's topic in Art, Media & Technology
The point is the same as with The Clone Wars criticism thread. To record the weaknesses we perceive in the show's design, Eez. Later on when you look back at it, it helps you keep track of your own change in taste, and see clearer how the Star Wars franchise is developing. -
The Mirror's Edge sequel sounds exciting. Did ID Software give up their rights/development on Doom sequels and handed them to Bethesda?

Star Wars Rebels (2014) Negative Criticism Thread
Cerez replied to Cerez's topic in Art, Media & Technology
Just a reminder to keep it to hardcore criticism in this thread, people. Discussion about Rebels and praise of (aspects of) the show should go to the "official" Rebels thread instead. The topic here is what do you dislike/hate in the show and why? (Not saying that anyone was in the wrong, just trying to steer things straight.) -
I think he/she has been using OpenJK for SP but not for MP so far. @@ftftggj, in the same package you downloaded for OpenJK SP, there is an executable for MP as well. openjk.exe --> Multiplayer openjk_sp.exe --> Single Player

It's just stylisation. First they made it thicker, now they made it thinner... Makes you wonder if it would really hurt them so much to just keep the blades normal size...

Star Wars Rebels (2014) Negative Criticism Thread
Cerez replied to Cerez's topic in Art, Media & Technology
I'll start. My biggest grief with Rebels so far is the pacing of the episodes, actually. Meaningful events fly by too brief, too fast. There's not enough time to really absorb what's happening and connect with all the characters on a human level. Also, Rebels no longer seems to have the deep character development, the more mature, vulnerable and real human characters (with strengths and weaknesses) that The Clone Wars has established by the end of the series. Here the heroes seem largely invincible. They can do anything (Sabine the 'Swiss army knife'), Stormtroopers can fire a hundred times at them and they'll dodge every shot even if they're not Jedi. This to me seems more characteristic of and in-line with a children's cartoon, which is fine for children, but not really amusing for adults watching the show... I also find the visual style of an overall lower quality/detail in comparison, and the stylisation not consistent to real characteristic features, as it was in TCW. -
We did it for The Clone Wars, now it's time to do it for Rebels. This time I'm giving it an early start, seeing that we've only seen the first season of the show so far. It's so interesting to see how our taste changes over time as new Star Wars content keeps coming out, and these criticism threads provide a neat record of this. So, let's get started! The rules are the same: With all that said, what is it that you personally dislike or hate in the series, and why? Speak now, or forever hold your silence.

Sorry to resurrect, but what about an entirely new UI/menu for the game, that does this. It provides a (customisable) information and background on each character, and offers all its skin variants (even the invisible ones with a neat placeholder icon) under each character. It's a bigger project, sure, but it would be nice to revamp the original and limited menu style of JK3 to create something nicer for collectors.

Where is your GTKRadiant installed? Did you install it to the default location it asked for? It seems I'm right about the GameData ending to the basepath: http://jkhub.org/tutorials/article/98-getting-started-with-mapping/ Note that:

Damn... In that case it could be that it's hard-wired to look for JKA on the C drive. I can't think of anything else...

As to why she did not appear at Ahsoka's trial, it's a mystery... Good point, but I guess Anakin always had it in him with all that rageful temperament from his youth. He chokes like other Jedi use telekinesis -- it comes natural to him. Barriss, on the other hand, has been taught nothing but peace and moderation from youth, so it's quite out of character for her to pull a strong Force choke like that, blindly across a whole room, no less! Unless the Barriss we thought we knew is not the Barriss she really is... Edit: Never would have happened with The Clone Wars visual style.

This is just a wild shot, but try E:\Jedi Academy\GameData as the basepath. It may not be clever enough to figure it out on its own...

There is so much more to Barriss' story that we don't know. If you watch the last episodes of The Clone Wars Season 5 again, the strange way Letta behaves, the things she says, and the way Barriss shows regret at certain moments suggest that there were much bigger powers at play that were a motivate for her actions. I'm even doubtful that it was Barriss who actually killed Letta. And if she did, where did she learn to Force choke? Her Master certainly wouldn't have taught her that. I keep wondering what made her change from the passive, seemingly content, and obedient Padawan we see her as in the Battle Factory episodes to the active and revengeful Dark Jedi she had become by the end of the series. If she is to have survived her execution, it must be because she was rescued, perhaps by the very same people that were the masterminds behind the bombing of the Jedi Temple -- as she couldn't have done it alone, and Letta was no demolitions expert, either. She must have had powerful connections who helped her and influenced her to do what she did. She must have sunk into very bad company... I also want to know what traumatic events made Barriss convinced that the Jedi are "warmongers" and "killers", in her own words.

That's next, after the skin shading/painting/sourcing (back and arms) and the face texture revamp. Part of the final touches.

Makes sense. Thanks, @@mrwonko! So reusing the same image file as textures for different model sections (or even models) would technically improve performance, not hinder it, right? I guess it's only a matter of how neat you want to keep your textures for ease of use, and how much space you have to work with within the given resolution of the image file. (My biggest texture file is 1024x1024 currently, so I guess this question in my case is quite trivial, then.)
-
This is a bit of an expert query, but I'm wondering if anyone knows the answer. I'm trying to find out what is best practice for using image files for player model textures in JKA in consideration to performance. Specifically I'm interested in four closely related questions: 1. When loading a texture for a section of the model, does JKA load the entire image file that's named as the source, or only the area of the image file that corresponds to the model section, based on the UV Map? 2. If the same image file is used on multiple sections of the model for the textures, will JKA reload the same image file each time, or keep it in memory and simply re-use it on each model section? 3. When using cull twoside, is it important to cover only the minimum two-sided texture area required? 4. How much of an impact do player model texture files make in practical terms on the speed of the game? Is this something that I should be worrying about at all?

Another quickie: the pouch, now 3D, textured and spec shaded.

Illegal to use Lucas arts material (music/audio) in mods?
Cerez replied to luiwan's topic in General Modding Discussions
Well, so far Disney's been okay with fan art of various types based on their main animated features, so I don't think they'll throw a fuss about Star Wars. As long as you're not making money on it, yes... -
Just a quickie: The boots are done, specs and all.

No comment. We'd better stop with this before it develops into another fight over nothing again.

If you could change Rosh Penin,...
Cerez replied to Mert-K's topic in Jedi Knight General Discussions
I knew the former. That was actually a better role for that actor, being an annoying and self-obsessed villain. I feel that Rosh could really use a real Dark Side influence, and be turned into a more in-depth character through a comprehensive mod. That would create a story where the player is actually emotionally moved by what plays out between the characters for a change. Rosh wouldn't just be some stupid kid messing around, but a worthy friend and rival instead, who is tempted by the Dark Side. Then, what happens to him would matter more as well. -
Illegal to use Lucas arts material (music/audio) in mods?
Cerez replied to luiwan's topic in General Modding Discussions
Ask for permission and credit where you can, but otherwise anything built on the Star Wars universe by fans is legally considered theft pretty much. None of this content is truly legal. It's just a matter of not pissing off anyone, so the mods can stay. -
1. The Clone Wars starter pack above comes with the two main characters in a bundle. The playset also contains a story mode that is basically a story from The Clone Wars show. 2. Parents in general rarely have the time to watch every TV show and cartoon to see if it's appropriate for their children. That's why most trust the ratings. The parents may be the ones to buy it, but their children are the ones to suggest what they like.
