Although I'm a loyal fan to PlayStation and Nintendo, I admire Microsoft for being gamer-friendly and actually providing backwards compatibility for a variety of older games. I mean, if you own a game already, why would you want to pay for it again?

Sure, there are many reasons for that, but backwards compatibility is way more convenient.
