About This File

So back in the waning days of Jedi Outcast, there was a large group of skins that came out depicting many of our beloved movie characters, such as Yoda, Mace WIndu, Saesee Tiin - wait, why was this guy one of our favorites again? \(^.^)/ Among those wonderful (for the time) movie models and skins was one of our favorite characters of all the movies: Obi Wan Kenobi. But I'm not talking about Padawan Obi, I'm talkin' Old Ben! Who could forget running around maps as that crazy old hermit, taunting "this little one's not worth the effort" and having epic movie duels against Darth Vader, ending by disengaging your saber and going into spec when he hit you? xD

Alas, those models are horribly outdated and mostly lost to time. And in the years since, I haven't really seen any great attempts to bring us an older Tatooine exiled Obi Wan. While I can't provide you an exact Obi Wan from ANH, I have provided the next best thing: a reskin of Hapslash's remarkable ROTS Obi Wan, revamped to carry more of the facial characteristics and age of Alec Guinness. I've included, in addition to custom sounds from ANH (thanks to well as a reskin of the General Kenobi lightsaber, the polished metal areas made duller to reflect wear, as well as replacing the emitter matrix and stabilizing ring with black parts to appear as the lightsaber did in ANH. (And no, I don't know that much about lightsaber parts, thanks Wookieepedia!)

Some minor things to note. I could not get the NPC to wear his robe, trying to use the robed variant resulted in an invisible NPC. So while the bot wears the robe, the NPC does not. Otherwise the bot and NPC are effectively the same as the ones that come with Haps' ROTS Obi, I did not modify anything other than the names and skins used. Also, when I was attempting to convert the movie sounds to work, I ended up having to make them 16-bit wav files, since for whatever reason I could not get the mp3's to work (I assume the compression for LAME is too new and unrecognized by the game). Since it was easier to fix them using batch conversion, all the Haps' sounds that I kept were also converted in this process. It really didn't effect the filesize much, so hopefully no one minds.

That's about it. I had a lot of fun doing this little project. All the credits and such are in the readme. Hope everyone enjoys my first shot back into the modding community in over 8 years!

xD Sometimes I look at it and I think it looks like Sean Connery. Honestly, there's only so much you can do when the model is based on someone else's facial structure, though. Dooku?  Hmmm  Yeah I can see it in the hooded version. Check out the other screens though. Better yet load him up in game.

I would just work on the face and belt a little more and also the bottom portion of the robes need to be at the ankles, but besides that I really like the model I remember there used to be a Ben Kenobi model on File Front, but it disappeared.

Thanks. I can't do anything about the robes, that's the model. I am not a modeler, only a texture artist. I've done everything I can do with the limitations of the model. Thanks!

Getting the face right is always difficult, heh. I'm not modeler, so you probably shouldn't take my advice, but here goes:

-Make the face a bit fatter, and not as thin.

-Darken the beard textures a little bit

-Make him less angry (unless you want a darkside Old Ben :D).

Edit: Wait, just read some posts above. Is this purely a reskin? WELL DONE!!!!

It is in the Skins category, and he explains in the description as well. :P

I think it's very well done for a reskin. Nice work.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys. I would have done all the suggestions mentioned had I been able to alter the model. ;) If anyone who models wants to play around with that, it'd be fun, though I'm not sure Hapslash would want anyone messing with his model.  :P

I am thinking about a future update where I add a blue glowie skin.  I may try to soften the face up with some more drastic skinning changes, but initially I wanted to preserve a lot of the Ewen McGregor look to him, because I thought it would be neat to have a sort of "what "old Ben" Kenobi might look like if he were re-cast to be played by a 60-year old Ewen McGregor instead of a 60-year old Alec Guinness."  Also, I agree Langerd, I really thought that's what I'd end up with and I wasn't disappointed.  :D

Mini, that model has actually been around since JO, and it shows. Sorry I want to use a model that's actually up to today's gaming standards.

I like what you tried to do, but I'd personally start off with another model... though there's already a Ben in MBII that I favor.

The kilt of the robes is too short, the boots are a bit darker than they should be, and the upper robe has the brown exposure up too high, and it's more overlapped than Ben's. The belts are vastly different. And lastly, it doesn't exactly look like Ben, no offense. :/

The face looks a little too strong for someone above middle-aged, you should go a bit easier on the beard, and the hair styles are much different. Ben's hair is shorter right above the forehead and it's more unkempt on the back of his head.

However, I see that you tried to put Ewan McGregor as Alec's role. Still, I think he'd try to work with the makeup and hair changes and become accustomed to Ben Kenobi a bit better.

Anyway, cool. However, the best solution would to do some model editing and different textures.

Once again, Deviance, find me a model that will work that was released in the last 8 years and I'll work with it. I'm not using a JO model for this, and every single thing you "don't like" about my skin has nothing to do with my skin, it has to do with the model, except your criticism of the brown exposure...which I'm not sure what you mean. The "brown" color is at least 7 different shades of brown based on all the various different movie stills I looked at. Good luck finding the exact brown for that.

My final bit of advice for anyone who wants to criticize my work - I am open to criticism. However, I would like you to at least examine the skin in game before you start criticizing some of my choices. The screens I posted are from Modview, so that the detail can be seen a bit clearer. Remember that JA likes to wash out textures, so some choices are made to reflect the fact that the model doesn't have light on it in Modview. In the game he looks significantly softer. Most of the criticisms here, however, have been about the model choice. I refuse to use a JO model that has about 40 polygons to do a skin in 2014. Find me a model that isn't originally made 10+ years ago, and post a link to it, and I will consider re-releasing this skin on that model.

Thank you all for the comments. I appreciate that you like / dislike my work. I won't be responding to any more comments unless it's a specific question I can address, as I think I will just be rehashing the same points.  :)

I think it's great, considering what you had to work with. :winkthumb:

There's a Ben Kenobi skin in MBII that is way better than the JKO one. :P

Again, if you link it, I will look at it. I'm not digging through an entire mod just to dig a skin out that I don't even know can be used outside of the mod. The author may have made it specifically for the mod with a no-modifications request. Is there a standalone download for this model you speak of that is in MBII (which I never play and never will because I dislike the sabering?)
