    Ghost

Hahaha! Inyri, you never cease to amaze me! From awesome conversion packs to hoverboard vehicles to cute little ghosts.
  2. There is always going to be mistakes/errors. There hasn't been a single movie in film history where there hasn't been flaws in the special effects, no matter what technology was used. What makes the big difference is how the special effects are used to tell the story. Excessive use of special effects, a lot of action, and very little story development will feel like the prequel movies, even with the traditional special effects used in the new trilogy. The original trilogy had detailed story development -- that's what really sets it apart. Even though it was directed and written by a number of different people, in the end it came together into a coherent piece with a story that had meaning, and left an impact -- all mistakes included (whether in the updated versions or the original release).
  3. I think the audio channel used for the grunts is the same as the audio channel used for the taunts -- hence the cut-off. If I'm not wrong, I don't think this is possible without a rewrite to the game's code.
  4. Hmm... Actually, I do approve of this. We can't stay chained by the limits of the retail game's code forever. But we'll need to work out an easy installation method that works like a patch for the retail game for less tech savvy people. A setup wizard that works reliably for all releases of JKA.
  5. It would be good to fix it in OpenJK, but unfortunately that doesn't help vehicle design in the grand scale, since the custom vehicle rider animations will still be broken in the retail versions of the game.
  6. Yep, this seems to be the case. Neither changing riderAnim, nor editing the frame number in the model's animation.cfg seems to work. The only thing that works is an overwrite of the game's _humanoid animation.cfg, as Inyri has done.
  7. Thanks. I did notice that, and I've tried changing it, but ultimately it doesn't seem to make a difference. The game insists on using BOTH_VS_IDLE no matter what value is put into riderAnim...
  8. Here's a vehicle expert question: Is there any way to make a vehicle use a different animation than the default bike-style sitting animation for the rider -- for example, standing -- without changing/overriding the default game's animations? Inyri made a hoverboard vehicle a while back, but she also used an overwrite for the default bike-sit animation. Is it possible not to do that, and achieve some result with a vehicle?
  9. @@NumberWan I actually completely disagree; I prefer the more barren feel/look and even these small visual defects of the original trilogy to the "update". I didn't like the added galaxy celebrational sequence at the end. It felt way too forcably 'squeezed in', and out of line with the rest of the film. Defects add a certain production value/charm to a film, especially when you watch it as a child, and then you rewatch it as an adult. To me there is great value in seeing the 'artist's hand' in an artwork, and when I am rewatching a great film, I am expecting to see those faults too. Patching them up only creates a new set of faults and ruins the original merit of the artwork. Worth noting that animatronics is actually much older than CGI. Whether CGI or animatronics (and practical SFX) looks better on film depends on what applications these technologies are used for and to what extent. Jurassic Park (the first movie) uses a mix of the two technologies, and uses them quite balanced/efficiently, which is why its CG effects have been some of the most resilient in the face of the passage of time in the film industry.
  10. Absolutely brilliant! Shaak Ti in character at her finest. Superb location/scenes and endearing original characters. Intriguing mystery, and a brilliant new formula for storytelling. This fan wants more! From a critical perspective, a little ambiguity in the connected details to the plot regarding how a DNA sample/template can degenerate over a short time -- not really clear, but it doesn't detract from the story experience.
  11. While the original three movies had plenty of flaws, too, I still prefer the trilogy in its very first release. It stands the test of time and has a more gritty, real-life quality to it that I cherish. CGI special effects are just not the same, and visualising or explaining more often means taking away the imaginative charm of the piece. It's much like if you were to take the original Jurassic Park film and start revamping its special effects to "update" them. It would damage the integrity of the original film, and affect its imaginative charm. Yes, technology moves forward. But just because an older great film is no longer technologically up-to-date doesn't make it any less immersive or engaging. Updating its graphics only causes damage to the imaginative world the audience has created around it in their minds. That's my standing on all this, and I completely disagree with Lucas' philosophy on this -- that a creative work is never truly finished. If a creative work is released and loved and adopted by many people, have some integrity and respect for the work and its fans, and don't change it.

  14. You're on Windows 8.1, right? The CFG files I've pointed to are in "Documents/My Games/OpenJK/base". If you are using a custom resolution, it's possible that that's the culprit for the crashing. Try switching back to one of the default resolutions, and give it a try. And if this doesn't work, give the admin rights a try. You're not running the game under compatibility mode, are you? Is your build 64 or 32 bit?
  15. Can you do a test run by turning off Windows Firewall completely for a minute, and attempt to join the server from the other end? That would answer is the firewall is at fault after all, or if it's something else. This can be a number of potential issues. I once had an occasion where the router's software was buggy, and the recommended method for setting the forwarding didn't work properly. Only after going through the hidden advanced options, and setting everything manually in detail did the problem disappear. My advice -- as always -- is a process of elimination until you find the cause. Test it on the local network, then test it online without the firewall, then test with the firewall set properly -- and make sure it's not a bug in the router settings.
  16. Steps to troubleshoot: 1. Move everything but the assets0-3 PK3s out of your base folder, and launch the game. Does it still crash? 2. If on Windows, try giving administrative permissions to the game when launching it (right click and choose "Run as administrator"). Does it still crash? 3. Try moving your settings (CFG files) out of the "Documents/My Games/OpenJK/base" folder and launch the game. Does it still crash?
