    The Ravensoft master server was online today briefly. Their new system appears to be running on Microsoft Azure, so you can expect it to be a lot more stable and scalable when they've finished implementing it properly :)

      ...s, same is it always has done. You shouldn't see it going down due to DDoS attacks anymore, if they do it right. I'd love to share some code/architecture review insight with them, I've spent too many years procrastinating about master servers!

      It depends how they make use of Azure's capabilities. If they're just going to stick an old-school master server implementation on a VM, it's going to be the same. But if they are creating a new implementation that's built to use the cloud's auto-scaling and distributed storage abilities, then it'll be vastly improved under-the-hood.

       

      I don't think it'll make a noticable difference from a player's perspective though, it just sends a list of server...

      I think Raven's master server is for all of their id Tech 3-based games, aka JK2, JK3, SoF2, and ST:V-EF. (I could be wrong about those other games)

    The JKHub Master Server is back online again. It's at master.jkhub.org as always, and supports JKA and JK2 servers. It will undergo maintenance soon, but hopefully there won't be much downtime.

      Lies! Mono runs very well on Linux/OSX and has backing from Microsoft. The C# language specification itself is open, and the entire .NET framework source code is available for reference online.

      Do you think it's a coincidence that every service online worth mentioning is running on Linux platforms? Windows isn't the answer to everything.

    So what's better: vertex lighting or lightmaps?

      In JKA: Lightmaps give way better quality as they're texture of light baked onto a face. Vertex lighting only applies a light value to a single vertex, and the light values all over the face need to be interpolated between the vertices, meaning it looks poop.

      What I meant by physics is mathematics for moving players around a 2D world, such as player.X += speed * deltaSec, nothing too complex.

      If you're going to create a game from scratch by yourself, you need to understand/learn basic physics kinematic theory (I don't even remember what it's called), Force = Mass × Acceleration stuff.

    JKHub Master Server rebooting for maintenance, you might see shortness of servers on the list for a up to 10 minutes while the servers have a chance to heartbeat again. (This is not related to the #heartbleed vulnerability all over the internet today)

    Bought and abandoned three VPS hosts within 2 weeks. I should cut it down...

      RamNode is awesome! master.jkhub.org, builds.openjk.org, and didz.co.uk all run off only *one* of the lowest-tier VPSs they provide. $2 a month.

      The new kernel update seems to have brought up a few new problems. The master server might be unstable for a while today. (It already had a kernel panic earlier)
