Unless there are a lot of players, spreading out across the map gets boring because you end up running around the map to finally find someone, kill, then run around again to find someone else. That's why players bunch up in one spot when there are only a few. If you get a full server, you'll see it spread out a lot more.

Also, to get a full experience in playing semi-competitively, you'll probably have to join a clan or team, which put on events like TFFAs, tournaments, duels, etc. Otherwise, yeah, you'll be joining servers when clans are just chilling and FFAing.
