By skinning do you mean adjusting already exisitng textures or skin existing textures? I have never made my own textures before. I would be interested in learning how to but I am not quite sure where to begin yet.

I could always lay down a base coat on it first and you can just treat it like a reskin. I would say let me go ahead and sculpt in little details like facets and things, and a few base colors, making the uv map easier to go by? Starting from scratch hell if I know how on photoshop XD I would just scuplt, render shadow maps, and use those as the base personally.
