Managed to configure a joystick and sort of recreate Rogue Squadron in Battlefront 2 space combat...my childhood

  I ran the PC version of Rogue Squadron just fine on my PC (with the minor exception of the controls, which are atrocious without massive tinkering). Not sure why you are having trouble, probably win8 related?

  I ran it on win7 x64, you should be able to also, just gotta patch the .exe since the 16bit installer wont run. Once installed though it ran fine.
