  1. I held something in front of my mouth so it sounds like I'd be wearing a mask, it made the sound a bit softer(?), then compress it to hell, like 12:1 with attack and release at the minimum with threshold at like -15 so it gets distorted a bit already. I pitch shifted it just enough so I wouldn't sound weird. Now I just added some warm distortion and EQ'd the whole thing.

I tried a really quick replication of it to show how it may sound, if I'll find more time I'll try to work on it properly.

I'm not saying you've done a bad job or you're not competent, I'm saying you may have a wrong idea as it definitely doesn't sound as distorted in the movie.

And I think that's the issue, the key is to make a close impression of his voice, I know the problem, cause I've been trying to process my voice actor's voice into Vader and I made the same mistake with putting too much into it instead of trying to record it in a different way :)

I applaud you for trying to get the sound right at the source. Sounds like you've got one layer close to figured out... now you've got to figure out and blend in the other four or five lol :P depending on how you do it.

  2. Yes it is. The original voice is not processed with guitar amps.

You don't need any expensive equipment to understand how a particular sound or effect works.

... maybe a little too much distortion... well there's actually no "distortion" as an effect per say.. more likely you mean over compressed?... Though an unfortunate degree of compression, even a high degree of data compression has to occur in order for these files to be played at a seemingly loud enough level in the game, which is unfortunate when you're going for full range clarity :/ and poses an extra challenge when the bulk of your mix lives down below 3khz but you still need it to cut through in gameplay. Maybe you could shed some insight onto how to approach the issue? :)

  3. Nice. I don't think his voice was all that overdriven though. Take a listen to the trailer again (since we can't hear the movie on demand yet :P).

I think it's pretty close, the problem now is that your voice is now too distinguish-ably different from his.

I'm pretty sure they cleaned up his vocal a little extra for the trailer. In the movie his voice seemed much more distorted to me.

True, The main challenge was balancing out too much overdrive/trying to cover up the fact that I don't sound like Adam Driver... I have a few more ideas on how to approach it. I'll make another attempt soon I think.

  4. Listened to a few of your songs and they're actually pretty good. I quite liked Bird/Glass. Did you write any of the songs or did you just do the mixing/recording stuff?

Thanks! I was a little involved with the composition of the first 2 songs. and heavily involved in all the arrangements. I played bass, sang some backups, did all the tracking, and editing inside 2 weeks, then got someone else to mix it. Though in retrospect.. I could have done it as well. Bird/Glass is a beauty :) Dave (the singer) wrote maybe a decade ago. He's quite the songwriting talent. The punchline for 'At least she said "Enjoy"' (your mess of a life for the rest of your life) was taken from a real phone call from a girl... ya that's how she broke up with him, then hung up. lol.

    Comments appreciated, thanks!

  5. Indeed, whats your platform and software of choice?

I'm also wondering what you use for audio compositions and if you have any samples of music you've made before on soundcloud or something?

I'm a PC user. Running Cubase 5 (screw pro tools) I've got some outboard gear, tube preamps/compressor, and Line6Pod for guitar/amp processing and huge variety of effects. I've got loads of virtual instruments in Reason though I'm currently re-learning how to use them all. I'm working on some synthetic music that I can hopefully show off soon. I'll be fully up and running with that stuff as soon as I grab a keyboard and hopefully some basic analog synth units. So far I've just been recording bands and rock music. Here's an EP I did with my band last year. pretty cheaply done but it turned out ok. Cheers lads.

also listen to my Kylo Ren voice effect if you haven't already:

  6. Sounds good. What tube saturation are you using?

Thanks. There's some tube saturation built in to a vocal channel strip plugin I'm using, also Datube which is a simple tube drive plugin I think came with Cubase. Really anything that simulates what a 12ax7 preamp tube does will do the trick. If I were to do it again, (for a paying gig) I might re-amp the signal and put it through over-driven tube pre-amps, maybe some overdrive pedals and/or my guitar tube amp. I'm sure they did something similar for the real thing :)

  7. It's very nice, sounds like it's missing something still...not sure what.  Maybe it's just because of all the noise.

Just use Dropbox or Google Drive.

Alright. The only reason I asked is because the version I have is only allowing me to play the "demo" of The Force Awakens playset, which is the reason the game continues to close itself when I reach a certain stage of the demo, which is not allowing me to continue to record Kylo Ren. I asked if you purchased it on steam because I could have logged in and downloaded it through your Steam which would have the content unlocked so I could record it then un-install the game. But since you didn't obtain it through Steam, I am officially stuck until a torrent gets released which includes the DLC of The Force Awakens.

Dudes check this out! I think this is nearly as close as I'm going to get it. Feedback much appreciated

  8. It's very nice, sounds like it's missing something still...not sure what.  Maybe it's just because of all the noise.

True, the EQ is a little out of balance I was tinkering with it too much, trying to compensate for his lack-luster performance, and boosting all sorts of noise :( Adam driver is fired but I'm still going to nail this  :sun: stay tuned. Thanks for checkin it.

  9. Vocaroo is a good way of quickly sharing sounds, just post a link here so we can all here and then I'm sure if "Kylo Ren" and others here like it you can send em higher quality flac/wavs via email.

Nice idea but that Vocaroo site just records you on the spot via your camera microphone... to be clear I'm not doing an impersonation here lol. I replicated the effects processing using plugins that gets you the Kylo Ren voice/mask effect and it seems to work well on almost any male voice recording, I've yet to put some Adam Driver dialogue through it though I might try that today :)

Any other suggestions on where I can upload some samples to show you guys? is myspace still a thing? lol

  10. Dudes, I've got a pretty "darn good if I can say so" Kylo Ren effect going, even with my own voice. it's totally usable and frankly beats what the jokers on youtube are doing. Pardon me, I just joined this forum, is there a way to send/post a sample file? Otherwise anyone interested can message me with their email and I'll send a small mp3 over. If anyone needs Kylo Ren dialogue for their mod, I believe I can generate it.

  11. That gets you part of the way there... the rest is a simple doubling effect mixed hot, compression, and a couple midrange EQ bands boosted, driving multiple stages of tube drive/saturation. I'm convinced I've got a 95% convincing Kylo Ren effect going with my own voice. Still needs minor tweaking and EQing but I can send you a sample of what I've got so far if you're into it, I could record whatever Kylo Ren dialogue you'd like. That goes for anybody :) If you don't like it, you could always not use it :P

  12. I just read that on the other thread! If you can figure out how to pull the audio from the disney infinity Gamedata I can definitely format it for JA. I don't have disney infinity... but I was even thinking about trying to replicate the mask effect, that way I could run any dry Adam Driver dialogue through it and it would work... either way, I'll look into it!

  13. Hey lads and lasses,

I'm an audio engineer who's getting into sound design and SFX. Anyone making a mod, let me know if you want sound and I'd be happy to deliver. I have the gear and the know-how :) just in it for the experience and the fun of star wars. Happy to provide sound effects and voices for characters, weapons, special effects, foley, ambiance, even music. Just let me know what your mod or playermodel needs and you've got it!

    Cheers

  14. Hey ya'll. If you ever ran into a switch style saber staffer you couldn't beat.. it was probably me :P Soresu/Juyo. Speed, agression, and endless combos are my thing. None of that jumpy, pokey, wiggly stuff for me, though I'll admit a very good ataru fighter is still my achilles heel.

I love Modding this game! I'm not a coder (yet) though I've had a lot of fun messing with NPC files and putting other people's skins and models to work. I'm a very skilled SOUND engineer who wants to attach his name to some worthy projects. Very high quality sound design, can even do original music scores and I'm willing to work for free at the moment. If anybody needs sounds, look no further! looking forward to dueling and collaborating with my fellow star wars JA fans!

    Cheers.
