In order for the force to maintain its balance within the known universe it has to create an alternate entity for all living things. The negative plane of the universe maintains a relative counter force within itself. That is to say that even the great Yoda has a Sith Yoda existing in the negative plane of reality. This concept was created only to support this character, and is not part of the StarWars universe created by Lucas.
