Redemption or Eve of Redemption is a small Single Player modification for Jedi Academy. One of the specifics of the story is that you play for a Dark Side User.

Story[edit]

Redemption tells the story of a previously unknown, yet possibly seen character – the Reborn warrior by the name of Taryk Kron. After his master Desann perished, he allied himself with an Imperial commander Stavan, who was giving him multiple missions promising that upon completing all the tasks, the Reborn warrior would be given the chance to finally avenge his fall at the hands of Kyle Katarn, as well as getting a place by his side at the newly formed Empire.

Taryk Kron receives his orders.

The new assignment takes Taryk to Coruscant, where he has to infiltrate the sewers in order to find the mercenary, who cries information on the conspirator, trading sensitive information on Imperial operations. While he is moving through the Coruscant Underworld, he encounters multiple swamptroopers and droids, only to meet in the end his former counterpart in Desann's league - Glykan. The latter reluctantly recognizes the Reborn, only to be infuriated, when Kron refuses to join Tavion's cult. Glykan and Taryk then begin an intense lightsaber duel, in which the latter proves to be the strongest.

Meanwhile Stavan learns, that his informant Sagus Faas backstabbed him and orders the Reborn to find and kill him in his nightclub on Coruscant. The Reborn follows the escaping thug through the streets of the New Republic capital, engaging his bodyguards and suddenly arrived Jedi. In the end Taryk brutally slaughters Sagus and receives a message from Stavan only to tell him that their cooperation is no more, despite the protests of the Imperial.

The final scene shows Jan Ors and Kyle Katarn near Raven's Claw in a spaceport on a desert planet (presumably Tatooine), when someone - actually Taryk Kron - is watching them and igniting his lightsaber.

Gameplay[edit]

The mod includes three perfectly designed maps, set in various locations of planet Coruscant, as well as showing a desert planet in the final cutscene. The first mission is a large foggy underground area with multiple enemies, which include swamp troopers, sentry droids, turrets and Ragnos cultists, as well as the New Reborn Glykan as the level's boss. This map boasts quite a few puzzles for the Players in order to move to the next location.

The second level is a large area with a nightclub, surrounded by streets with colorful advertisements and an impressive panoramic view of the city planet. All the enemies are the ones from Jedi Academy and the new characters use the original skins for all the cutscenes. These include multiple talks between Taryk and Stavan, which is shown as hologram via the ROQ file, demonstrated by an R2 astromech droid.

When beginning a new game, the Player is offered to choose difficulty, which is renamed in the mod to Sithspit, Sith Acolyte, Sith Apprentice and Sith Lord for Very Easy, Easy, Medium and Hard levels of difficulty respectively.

Addons[edit]

In February 2021 a different version of the mod was made by Sovietmann, which was released at www.playground.ru and titled "Eve of Redemption: Sovietmann Edition". This pack adds the mod maps to the main game, allows choosing a different model, as well as adds 999 points to the Force level, among a few other things.

Behind the scenes[edit]

The developer seem to have tried to create a new story, but with a great respect towards Star Wars canon and Saga's traditions. Not just the level design is purely inspired by what we see in the films and EU materials, but even the skybox is a completely new, recreated city line of Coruscant. The story is made in such a way, that it doesn't contradict JO or JA original plots, still presenting a unique experience playing for a rogue Reborn warrior.

Interestingly, Commander Stavan, which gives the order via holograms, is actually the character briefly mentioned in the first mission of Jedi Outcast: while on Kejim, Kyle Katarn can listen to a few messages coming to Imperial outpost, including the dissatisfaction of Galak Fyyar with Stavan's performance at his current position.

The character Taryk Kron is a standard Reborn warrior (Reborn_Boss), which according to the backstory was among the Dark Side users, defeated by Kyle Katarn back during the Desann's conflict in JO. However among the many perished warriors Kron was the only survivor, which decided to follow his own path rather than joining a new party and is aimed at killing Katarn, avenging his failure and his master's death.

The final scene of the mod is ambiguous, showing Taryk ready to fight Kyle Katarn. It is most likely, that the fight ended not in favor of the Reborn.
