== History ==
The group was founded in 1997, then under the name "Deutsche ClanLiga". In 2000, they changed their name to the now "ESL". The company's many tournaments are run by volunteer admins. They have since grown to become one of Europe's largest eSport company.

== ESL and JKA ==

JKA is one of the many games that are listed under the ESL's "eSport game list". Though the majority of competition is found within the European ESL community. Although the exact number of [[Competitive Play|competitive JKA]] players is unknown, it can be assumed that close to half or less then half make up the competitive side of the JKA community. For the most part, any competition is held on basejka, with no mods whatsoever (some will allow cosmetic mods such as skins and textures).

It is often believed that some ESL players act in a rude fashion when on non-competitive servers or communities, often breaking the server rules and acting in a crude manner towards other players. This has created a deep resentment in many non-competitive players for ESL players, and some admins have banned well known ESL'ers on the spot. This, however does not reflect on everyone, and many fail to see a difference.
