Coruscant is the vibrant heart and capital of the galaxy, city-covered planet that was the seat of government for the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire that followed, and the New Republic.

Overview

Situated in the heart of the galaxy, Coruscant was the seat of government for the Galactic Republic and the Empire that supplanted it. Over thousands of years of civilization, the planet has been entirely enveloped by cityscapes and urban sprawl. Immense skyscrapers reach high into the atmosphere, and stretch down deep into the dark shadows. Crisscrossing the skyline are streams of unending repulsorlift traffic. Even in the depths of night, Coruscant is alive with glittering lights and rivers of traffic, a bustling megalopolis that refuses to sleep.

Some of the most important decisions, affecting the lives of trillions, have been made on Coruscant. It has long been the center of government, and the site of residence for the galaxy's Supreme Chancellor. From a towering high-rise overlooking a gleaming range of mountainous edifices, rulers such as Valorum and Palpatine have carefully plotted the future of the Republic.

Though the Chancellor steered the government, issues were ultimately settled in the cavernous rotunda of the Galactic Senate. Thousands of senators and galactic representatives from the far-flung worlds of the Republic would debate pressing issues and push forward countless agendas.

As Coruscant was the center-point for decisions affecting the massive engines of commerce in the galaxy, it was also a nexus of graft and corruption. Vast fortunes were spent to ensure that corporations were allowed to operate without profit-stunting restrictions. Entities such as the Trade Federation and the Commerce Guild held incredible sway over the inner workings of Coruscant politics.

Removed from this corruption and encased in a gleaming tower was the Jedi High Council. Coruscant was home to the Jedi Temple, and the august order was answerable to the Senate, until Supreme Chancellor Palpatine assumed total control of the Republic.

A quite different world exists beneath the shimmering surface of the city-planet. In the lower levels, where sunlight never reaches, is a haze of artificial lights and flickering holograms, promising entertainment catering to a myriad of alien species and the full spectrum of morality. Citizens from above and below intermix in countless establishments offering escape, anonymity, jubilation and more than just a hint of danger.

Insulated by layers of defenses, the citizenry of Coruscant felt largely untouchable by the horrors of the Clone Wars. Nonetheless, the threat of the enemy provoked numerous changes on Coruscant in the name of increased security. Huge stretches of cityscape were transformed into military staging areas, and clone troopers were everywhere. This made it all the more of a shock when General Grievous, leaders of the Separatist droid army, staged a daring attack on the capital. He broke through the barriers that protected the city planet, and managed to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. The violent strike resulted in the deaths of thousands of Coruscant inhabitants.

Proving that danger lurked in every corner, Chancellor Palpatine found it easy for the Senate to accept his proclamation of a New Order -- a new government that would stand for peace and security, as the First Galactic Empire. Coruscant continued as the capital of the galaxy under this new regime.

Jedi Knight series

Dark Forces

The planet appears in the very first game in the series, even though it's called the Imperial City and not Coruscant, due to the fact that the name was only used in the films much later. While on a mission, Kyle Katarn has to deal with stormtroopers at the Imperial Security Operations building in order to obtain the data about Arc Hammer of his nemesis Rom Mohc. On his way out he also encounters Boba Fett, hired to eliminate Katarn.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight

Coruscant appears briefly in a cutscene of Dark Forces II, but only in case the player chose the dark side path – it shows Kyle Katarn as the new Emperor, ordering his new aide Sariss to wipe out the resistance on Danuta.

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

After successfully completing the mission on Kejim, Kyle Katarn and his co-pilot Jan Ors arrive on Coruscant to meet up with Mon Mothma, the leader of the New Republic, to discuss the crystals found in the Imperial labs. It is revealed that the mineral is native to Artus Prime, a remote New Republic mining world - a mission which both Kyle and Jan agree to complete to uncover the Imperial Remnant plot.

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Some years after the conflict with the Dark Jedi Desann, a new Jedi student named Jaden Korr, native to Coruscant, arrives on Yavin 4 to become a Jedi after successfully constructing a lightsaber without anyone's help. During the Jedi training, Jaden Korr is tasked on finding a criminal named Lannik Racto, who's been spotted in one of the shadowy districts on Coruscant. The whole area around his base is guarded by mercenaries and even several assassin droids, which would attack anyone close to the building. Jaden would capture Racto, and after questioning the criminal revealed the location of a factory producing these machines - the one on Nar Shaddaa.

Maps

Aside from the original games, Coruscant is also featured in many maps, created by fans for Multiplayer. Jedi Temple has been one of the most favorite locations among modders, which has been recreated in various colors and design. It is often chosen as a primary map for clans as well, in which the Jedi Council Chamber serves as the meeting room (or so it seems) for the members of the clan. Such a map would often include the Jedi Archives, the main hall, students private rooms, as well as a training ground.

Among some less notable maps one would remember Dexter's Diner and Padme Amidala's apartments, which served as dueling rings in Multiplayer. Several authors used one of these for recreating their own stories, like 'Star Wars: A Galaxy in Darkness' by Darth Angelus.

With the release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, a lot of locations, pivotal to the Clone Wars, have been also made for Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Sith-J-Cull released several packs, devoted to this episode, one of which included the Galactic Senate of the Republic, where the legendary duel between Yoda and Darth Sidious took place. Battle over Coruscant is another popular location - players are offered to explore the Invisible Hand, a large separatist vessel, where Count Dooku dueled Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. At least one map depicts Coruscant as seen in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series.

Coruscant is also seen in several fan-made single player campaigns, such as the one in Redemption mod among some others.
