Rebel Trooper, sometimes called simply Rebel and later known as New Republic Trooper is the main military unit, used by the New Republic.
Background
Originally believed serving as guards for the Alderanian authorities and officials, these soldiers became associated a lot with the Rebel Alliance. Some early designs of the prolonged white helmets were used by soldiers on Alderaan during the Clone Wars. Notably similar helmets have been known to be used by the Old Republic itself some 4 thousand years before the rise of Palpatine.
During the final years of the Galactic Empire, these soldiers were aboard Tantive IV, a diplomatic vessel of princess Leia Organa. The starship was caught by the Imperial Star Destroyer, and upon entering the ship Imperial stormtroopers met a strong resistance from these soldiers. However they wouldn't stand a chance against a continuous line of Imperial troopers, especially when Darth Vader arrived to question the "diplomats" himself regarding the stolen Death Star plans provided prior by Kyle Katarn.
In later years the uniform was adopted as the primary one for all Rebel soldiers, except, when the environment required additional equipment and gear, such as the Rebel Base on Hoth. After the Emperor's death the New Republic relied a lot on the original Rebel troopers, which were stationed on many worlds, affiliated with the new government.
Appearances
In JO
Rebel Troopers appear in one of the last missions, when Desann and his forces attack Jedi Praxeum on Yavin IV. Many of these soldiers participate in the fights with swamptroopers in the jungle, while the other group repels the coming stormtroopers in the main hangar. One such Rebel is seen charged with securing a surviving stormtrooper in the backyard of the Academy after the battle ends.
In JA
A few years later a transport with new students of the Jedi Academy arrives on Yavin IV. The ship is piloted by an unknown Republic trooper, while many young people, including Jaden Korr and Rosh Penin are seen in the cabin discussing their soon acceptance into the Order. The talk is quite show though, when the ship is struck by an unknown beam from below and crash lands somewhere in the jungle. While it is assumed all members of the crew and passengers survived, the ultimate fate of this particular Republic trooper is unknown.
In MOTS
Rebel Troopers appear as the Player friendly NPCs in Mysteries of the Sith during the first mission, set on Altyr V. There Kyle Katarn has to deal with all the Imperial forces, and Rebel troopers assist him in stopping the invaders. Some more troopers seen, when Mara Jade is accompanying a Jedi Holocron aboard one of the Republic ships, when suddenly pirates attack them and steal the artifact. In this game they are made as reskins of Imperial Commandos from Dark Forces II game.
In mods
Rebel Troopers are often used as the main military force for the Alliance, which is featured in some of the projects by fans. Sometimes new skins are made for this model to randomize the looks of the soldiers, however on one occasion the whole trooper was recolored to match the uniform design of the Old Republic soldier from KOTOR.
A mod, which was planned to recreate all the missions from MOTS, also included adaptations of the original skins.
Behind the scenes
Although the NPCs both in JO and JA are called Rebel in game archives, they are referred to as New Republic soldier or Republic soldier in game plot.
