Coruscant is the central planet in the Galaxy, which has been the capital of major political organizations in the known Universe during at least 25 thousand years. Covered entirely by city districts, Coruscant was the centre of the Galactic civilization, home to the Galactic Senate and the Jedi Temple, and later - the seat of the Galactic Empire and the residence of the New Republic President.
Overview
Coruscant is the largest city-planet in the Galaxy and is also the most inhabited one by the species from very different worlds. Its history dates to the time immemorial, so that even the most advanced historians can't retell the earliest events of the planet. It is known, that the Galactic Republic was found on the planet some 250 centuries before the rise of Emperor Palpatine. Some time later it would include the Jedi Order HQ, which would eventually be known as the Jedi Temple.
For thousands of years it was considered to be as the shrine of peace and stability, though terrible wars didn't avoid the city-planet in the past, being attacked multiple times by the Sith of the old times (Great Hyperspace War), by the new Sith Empire (Exar Kun) and the True Sith (Great Galactic War). A period of peace, which led eventually to the demise of the Republic, was interrupted several times by minor conflicts, which involved Coruscant, such as the terrorist attacks of the Flail and Yinchorri Uprising some time before Battle of Naboo. Even so for many the last thousand years were considered to be an era of peace, an opinion, shared by the senator Lott Dod of the Trade Federation and governor Sio Bible of Naboo.
Everything change with the beginning of the separatist crisis and the subsequent Clone Wars, which would bring destruction and death even upon the surface of the Galactic capital, so secure and stabile, as some people thought. During the above mentioned conflict the separatists attacked Coruscant multiple times, with the final battle taking place some weeks if not days before the formation of the Galactic Empire. With the separatists forces defeated and the Jedi weakened, the then Chancellor of the Repiblic, Palpatine, declared himself the new Emperor and all the Jedi traitors to the existing regime.
Coruscant was transformed into the seat of the New Order, which would eradicate both the Jedi and the remnants of the Old Republic. This was not the end, however, as the newly formed Rebel Alliance began its struggle against the tyranny and after years of Galactic Civil war won several crucial battles, including the one, which caused the destruction of the first Death Star, as well as the Battle of Endor - a pivotal event, which resulted in the formation of the New Republic, which recaptured the Core World within year after the Emperor's demise.
In JO/JA
After successfully completing the mission on Kejim, Kyle Katarn and his co-pilot Jan Ors arrive on Coruscant to meet up with Mon Mothma, the leader of the New Republic to discuss the crystals, found in the Imperial labs. It is revealed, that the mineral is native to Artus Prime, another remote Imperial world - a mission, which both Kyle and Jan agree to complete to uncover the Imperial Remnant plot.
Some time after the conflict with the Dark Jedi Desann, a new student, native to Coruscant, arrives on Yavin IV to become a Jedi after successfully constructing a lightsaber without anyone's help. During the Jedi training Jaden is tasked on finding a criminal named Lannik Racto, who's been spotted in one of the shadowy districts on Coruscant. The whole area around his base is guarded by mercenaries and even several assassin droids, which would attack anyone close to the building. Jaden would capture Racto and after questioning the criminal reveals the location of a factory, producing these machines - the one on Nar Shaddaa.
In other stories
When Coruscant was introduced to Star Wars for the first time, it had no real name, simply referred as the Imperial Centre. It was believed to be a large city-planet with the Imperial Palace and was planned to appear in Star Wars Episode VI, but instead the second Death Star is where Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader and brings his father back to Light. It was not until 1991, when Timothy Zahn introduced the name in his novel Heir to the Empire. Since then it became adopted in multiple Star Wars sources, and was the first Expanded Universe title, which made it into the films, demonstrated for the first time in The Phantom Menace.
Coruscant did appear however even earlier than that. Dark Forces video game includes a mission of Kyle Katarn to Imperial Security Operations Building, which was located in the Imperial Centre. Dark Forces II also depicts Coruscant in the non-canonical Dark Side ending, where Kyle becomes the new Emperor with Sariss at his side.
The planet was shown relatively close to newer sources in such old games as Shadows of the Empire, in which it is revealed, that it was also home to the criminal syndicate called the Black Sun, led by Prince Xizor. Star Wars Rebellion depicts the recapture of Coruscant by the Rebel Alliance after Battle of Endor.
