Nar Shaddaa also known as The Vertical City, is a large city planet, originally introduced in Dark Forces video game. It was revisited by Kyle Katarn multiple times both during his career as a Rebel agent and a Jedi Master.
Overview
Nar Shaddaa was once a simple planet, covered with oceans and forests, that was the home to the native humanoids of Ganks. When the Hutt representatives arrived on the nearby Evocar planet, they transformed it to fit their needs, poisoning the local flora and fauna, as well as driving away the local Evocii to Nar Shaddaa. In the upcoming centuries, the Evocar became known as Nal Hutta and as the capital for the Hutts, while Nar Shaddaa turned into a large ecumenopolis with skyscrapers, kilometers high.
For the most of its history, Nar Shaddaa was known to many as the dirty and ugly city-planet, full of criminals of all traits. Even long before the Galactic Empire rise, it had many sectors controlled by smaller gangs, as well as large criminal syndicates such as The Exchange. These often caused trouble to local ordinary citizens as well as participated in multiple criminal activities such as slavery, smuggling and illegal spice trade.
During Palpatine's reign, the planet was partly occupied by the Empire, which built an Imperial TIE fighters facility above the Nar Shaddaa. In later years it was controlled by criminal organizations for the most part.
In JO/JA
Nar Shaddaa is the place, where Kyle Katarn heads after he lost his fight to Desann on Artus Prime. Believing his counterpart Jan Ors to be killed and planning to stop the Dark Jedi, Kyle meets up with Luke Skywalker on Yavin IV to regain his Jedi powers. There he learns, that Desann had some dealings with thugs on Nar Shaddaa. In the city Kyle starts his own investigation by entering a local cantina, owned by Reelo Baruk, a rodian, who was in league with Desann. The local bartender refused to reveal thug's location at first, by was apprehended by Kyle and hinted that the Jedi should follow the trash compactors to find the lair of Baruk. He was attacked there and together with Lando Calryssian managed to repel the many bounty hunters, who tried to stop them from leaving Nar Shaddaa.
Years later Kyle's student Jaden Korr would be searching for Lannik Racto, a criminal from Coruscant, who was supplying dangerous assassin droids to the Disciples of Ragnos cult. When captured he told the young Jedi, that the droids were produced on Nar Shaddaa.
In other stories
In JK series Nar Shaddaa was one of the missions in Dark Forces video game, when Kyle has to infiltrate Jabba the Hutt's cruiser in its orbit. The planet is revealed further in the sequel - Dark Forces II, where Kyle meets 8T88 to gain information on his father's death. The information droid only mentions the name of Dark Jedi Jerec responsible, but ultimately betrays Katarn and leaves him at the mercy of the local Gran thugs. Kyle then pursues the droid in order to get the data disc from Sulon, while 8T88 leaves Nar Shaddaa in his shuttle.
Nar Shaddaa is also seen and mentioned in various books, and can be revisited by the Players in other games, such as KOTOR 2 after the Jedi Civil War, SWTOR during the Great Galactic War and in The Force Unleashed during the adventures of Vader's apprentice Starkiller.
Maps
Nar Shaddaa gained much popularity due to many maps, available in a few mods as well as for Multiplayer. Usually they all follow the JO style: it's a dark and spacious location with a few lights and lamps, as well as ads around the place. Grans, Rodians and Weequays would be placed as the main antagonists in such locations. Such mods as Dark Forces and Dark Forces II would include Nar Shaddaa as seen in their respective original levels.
