Gunslinger's Academy is a mod founded and maintained by eezstreet that aims to bring modern combat to Jedi Academy. Weapon models, balancing and other misc. help was done by Silverfang, with maps being done by j3rk. Several other people have contributed to the mod.
Gameplay
Gunslinger's Academy includes several features from other modern shooters such as Call of Duty. Some key features include regenerating health, grenade indicators, sprinting, iron sights, and all new weapon models. A few maps were added as well, and an enhanced CO-OP mode was featured, as well as new VIP Escort and Ninja gametypes. The mod is highly modder-friendly, with features such as themed maps (with specific player models and guns for each team), new weapons, and new HUD skins being possible without edits to the code.
Gameplay-wise, the game is not too complex, but it does feature a large degree of depth. There are a large variety of gamemodes including Free for All, Duel, Team Deathmatch, VIP Escort, Capture the Flag, Ninja, CO-OP. Last Man Standing and Instagib were also included as Cvars. The latest, unreleased version also has a Siege map. In most gametypes, the player chooses their primary weapon, sidearm and explosive weapons. The player can then swap out primary weapons and sidearms for each other, or swap explosives. Most explosives are quickly accessible using a Quick Throw key. Most sidearms can also be dual-wielded. To do this, players hold their Iron Sights key and their use key. This can be done on any two weapons which are able to be dual-wielded, for instance, one can mix-n-match a sawed-off shotgun and a revolver, or other options.
Each weapon is designed around feeling unique to the player. In all, the game features over 30 weapons: M&P 40, Steyr TMP, M14 EBR, MP5A3, M16 Assault Rifle Magnum Revolver, Ithaca 37 Shotgun, M249 SAW, AK-104 Assault Rifle, Glock 18C Machine Pistol, M1014 Tactical Shotgun, Sawed Off Shotgun, Steyr AUG, FN P90 Personal Defense Weapon, H&K USP Match, Micro Uzi, Barrett M98C, Silenced MP5, M16 Assault Rifle w/ C-Mag, Frag Grenades, Flashbangs, C4, RPG-7, Stun Grenades, Smoke Grenades, Gas Grenades, Melee and a Taser Stun Gun.
Each weapon requires a different strategy for the player to use and overcome, and there are effective counters for most weapons. For instance, the Gas Grenade is used to clear enemy players from an area or block a path, while the Smoke Grenade is used to cover an entrance.
Some weapons have hidden properties which are not readily apparent. For instance, the C4 can quickly be detonated using the Quick Throw key. RPGs can randomly veer off course. When killed while wielding grenades, the player may drop a grenade from their corpse.
Players can also utilize killstreaks for things such as advanced missile strikes, seeing through walls, and sentry guns. The killstreaks were designed to not be as overpowered as the ones in Call of Duty.
Reception
The mod received mixed reception, with players not wanting a mod similar to Call of Duty, and criticism directed at the lack of UV maps and textures for the gun models. The mod was praised however for its excellent combat and its addictive multiplayer.
