The New Republic is a large union of different star systems, which was established soon after the fall of the Galactic Empire. It is the successor to the Rebel Alliance, which originally hired Kyle Katarn to steal the plans of the first Death Star. Later on he would continue to take upon various missions from the New Republic.
History
When Emperor Palpatine rose to power during the Clone Wars, he made everything possible to remove the old traits of the Galactic Republic, a huge democratic institution consisting of thousands of star systems. When the dark times fell upon the Galaxy, a group of Freedom fighters retained their hope to restore the once peace and justice, thus forming the Rebel Alliance to restore the Republic. Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Garm Bel Iblis were the first to declare the new organisation to fight the Empire, while many more smaller Rebel cells also struggled against it on different planets.
Seeing the rise of the Rebellion, the Emperor and his servants wanted the conflict to end before its peak. A superweapon, named the Death Star, was soon to be complete and would be able to destroy entire planets at once. This threat made Mon Mothma to ask Kyle Katarn to go to Danuta and steal the plans for the secret weapon. These schematics would later be send to princess Leia Organa.
After the destruction of the Death Star Kyle was involved in one more large mission for the Rebels – the Dark Trooper project.
When the Empire fell, the Rebellion gained control of Coruscant and many other systems, restoring former political institutions, such as the Galactic Senate. Kyle Katarn continued his collaboration with Republic, which was still very weak after Battle of Endor. Some of the former Imperial servants wanted to continue the fight and gain control over the throne, such as the Dark Jedi Jerec. At this point Kyle wasn't following any specific orders from the Republic, but rather wanted justice: Jerec was one of those, who murdered his father years prior on Sulon. On his journey the agent would duel and kill the Dark Jedi, who wanted to gain powers from the Valley of the Jedi.
Kyle continued to train as Jedi together with Mara Jade, with whom they spent much time at the New Republic base on Altyr V. However the Empire attacked the planet with two artificial asteroids, and Kyle got involved in another Republic mission. Mara also takes on several tasks from Mon Mothma at this point.
In JO/JA series
After abandoning the Jedi ways Kyle returned to his work as a mercenary and Republic agent. At this point he would have a mission to Kejim to investigate the Imperial activity at an old outpost. Together with his co-pilot Jan Ors he would later travel to Artus Prime, where he found the Empire making experiments with Artusian crystals on New Republic citizens. This was just the beginning of the Empire Reborn plot, which ended with the attack on Yavin IV. A massive battle, involving the Jedi and the New Republic troopers fighting off Imperial forces and Reborn warriors would take place in the old Massassii ruins. Kyle himself chased and dueled Desann, a Dark Jedi and the mastermind behind this plot.
The New Republic possibly had a small outpost on Yavin IV and assisted the Jedi Order in terms of transportation, as when Jaden Korr was invited to the Academy, he and other candidates were taken there on a transport, piloted by a New Republic soldier. The young Jedi would also have different tasks, including ones directly from the Republic.
Behind the scenes
In JK series, the New Republic is present through several NPC allies, such as Mon Mothma, Rebel, Rebel pilot and a few others. Most of them don't use any weapons however and join the Player in a mission only on a few occasions. Notably, while the Rebel alliance no longer exists, the names of the NPCs are still those from the films ("Rebel"). A cutscene on Coruscant indicates, that the planet was recaptured by the Alliance and became the new capital.
In new Star Wars canon, the New Republic was restored after the fall of the Empire, which in its turn signed Galactic Concordance, which became the First Order and was obliged to move to remote star systems and restrained them from creating new armies and fleet. Seeing Coruscant as a former seat of the old tyranny and corruption, the New Republic moved its capital to Hosnian Prime, another city-planet, which was later destroyed by the Starkiller base.
