The lightsaber is the signature weapon of the Jedi, and one of the primary weapons in the Jedi Knight series ever since the release of Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. It is a a melee weapon which can be used to attack in close range, deflect most projectiles and can be thrown with the Force.
New students at the Jedi Academy are only given the choice to use a standard lightsaber when beginning their training. As students develop their skills, other alternatives become available.
Techniques
There are three types of lightsaber techniques:
Colors
In Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, the following lightsaber colors are available to the player:

Availability
In Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, only the single saber is available, being unlocked after the first few missions in single player.
In Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, the player start with a single saber with only Medium Style available. Later ,the player can unlock more styles, or switch techniques to either Dual Sabers or a Two-Handed Saber.
