Appearances
In JO/JA
Grans are one of enemies on Nar Shaddaa, where Kyle Katarn investigates Remnant activities, also searching for Reelo Baruk. Upon entering the cantina to talk with the barman, Kyle encounters several grans, as well as Rodians and Weequays. These mercenaries attack the Jedi as soon as the bar is closed, and many more wait for him outside. Many grans would use thermal detonators to kill Kyle, sometimes not hesitation throwing them even in closed space. Others would rely on E-11 blasters.
Some grans would also be present on Bespin, while helping the Imperials occupy the Upper levels of Cloud City. Those who survived the battle with Katarn, were captured by Bespin cops.
A few years later grans would again be involved in the Imperial Remnant activities, when Tavion Axmis and her Sith Cult tried to destroy the Jedi and resurrect Marka Ragnos. They were part of the group capturing Raven's Claw on Tatooine in Mos Eisley, as well as attacking Jaden Korr on Coruscant.
In other stories
Grans are the first alien enemy, encountered by players in Dark Forces, where they guard the entrance to the secret base of Moff Ribus. In Dark Forces II they play a more prominent role: Kyle meets up with 8T88 to get information on his father's death, but the information droid betrays him and leaves with two mercenaries on Nar Shaddaa. The gran then would point the blaster in Katarn and say, that Nar Shaddaa would be Kyle's grave. However the Rebel agent grabs a blaster from the second mercenary scaring gran, which then escapes from the cantina.
When Mara Jade tried to contact Ka'Pa the Hutt on Tatooine, she would be frequently attacked by grans and Tuskens in his Palace.
The species is also seen in the new films, where they are political figures rather than thugs, and in the Clone Wars series. Grans can also be seen in KOTOR games, ones being patrons at the swoop racing club on Manaan, while two others present on Nar Shaddaa after the Jedi Civil War.
Behind the scenes
Interestingly, all grans in Dark Forces II are named Ree-Yees in game archives, while Gran is used in newer JKA games. All of them have large fists, a trait actually believed to be a rare thing - this is mainly because grans are based on Ree-Yees character, who suffered from a rare gran mutation due to an illness.
