Star Wars Episode VIII Discussion

Recommended Posts

The poster doesn't show it, but the trailer does have this – Kylo Ren seems to be having yellow eyes.

Also at least one shot wasn't clear for me – the so-called library. It's like a dark tree with some books. Some claim it's from Yoda or the old Jedi Temple.

We now finally see the new ships, moving like podracers in Episode I, to tell the truth. And AT-ATs ad the distance.

If I may say, in the trailer, his eyes are their natural brown. Also, there's no hint of the red outline around his eyes (usual for Sith Eyes) in the poster. TBH, the smaller version made it look like LUKE had Sith eyes. :o

It's difficult to say right now, but I guess, Kylo does have yellowish tone in his eyes. It could be just the reflection from a light or the lightsaber, but still it's a possible variant. The eyes aren't entirely yellow yet (TLJ takes place a few weeks if not days after TFA), so it's just a first step, where his eyes begin to change. Notably count Dooku didn't have any yellow eyes at all.

"...I only know one truth, it's time for the Jedi to end." So this is Luke talking in the doorway...

This doesn't bode well for the Star Wars galaxy-- without the Force and Jedi this would not be a great sci-fi universe... and goes against Yoda's dying directive-- "...pass on what you have learned..."

Not to mention this would undo the very "Balance" Rey just mentions.

Stupid line-- the writer should be flogged.

Maybe Luke is foretelling his death? If so, cheesy...

No, I'm predicting he's saying that the old Jedi Code clearly isn't working, after all these failures. It's basically created Dooku, Darth Vader and now Kylo Ren, in a way. He's probably saying a new form of the Jedi must be created, one that teaches control of the dark side, rather than completely avoiding it. This is seen in the New Jedi Order in Legends. Even in JKA, Kyle says a power isn't inherently evil, its how you use them.

So we could see the creation of the New Jedi Order or something similar to it, that teaches these new concepts.

You see that he is training Rey. The dialogue in the beginning, as well as you see them on the cliff. So saying the Jedi need to die with me completely wouldn't make sense.

This phrase of his already raised quite a discussion on various communities. The one, which might be the right lead here is the balance, which's been in many different stories now, including Rebels, where we see Bendu. It also reminds many about the Grey Jedi, which somewhere in between, as well as about the Jed'Aii (or what is the right name?) from the late comics.

My opinion, is that 1) the balance is between the two, not in the connection of Light and Darkness, combined (this contradicts the very idea of George Lucas, but I can be wrong) and 2) Luke is wrong (even if he is a Master, his current perception must have been deformed by the later events with Kylo Ren and fall of the Jedi Order).

My thoughts exactly....except for the "New Jedi order" part....It should not have Jedi in the name to stand apart form "the old ways" and evolve into something greater.

It's Luke saying it. :P You see his mouth move.

But but but it can't be Star Wars without the Jedi. :(

There are actually minor phrases in the background – one from Leia, one from Obi Wan (I think) and one from Yoda (again, like in TFA).

There must be some sort of duplicity around all the mentioned things, including the "end". Star Wars are quite close to the Oriental philosophy, which in turn stands around the concept of life circles. So the end might not mean the real end in this instance.

I noticed, that when we see a closer look on one of the "books" with a Jedi Simbol there, the hand is in a black glove. So who's hand is that? It's not Luke's (we see the right arm, Luke had a prosthetics arm in TFA with no coverings), and not Rey's (she has grey clothes and in other shots her hands don't have any gloves). So does it mean we someone else? Maz Kanata? Some other character?

Could be Luke's hand, part of the flashback scene we're going to see most likely. He may have had a different outfit before things went to shit. :P

The book looks charred, so Luke could be going back into the burnt down (possible Jedi Temple) building to recover what he can.

I also noticed the statue, but in my opinion it's a bit too tall for Yoda. When you see Ach-To in Episode VII, the ruins look quite simple. There are a few items among the walls and stones though, but to tell the truth I expected the Jedi ancient architecture to look more like an Oriental palace. But in the past everything was possible. The very concept of the first Jedi temple isn't very convincing right now (it's Skellig after all). So such details like a Jedi statue could help establishing the planet as a true Star Wars place.

It seems, we now know the name of the birds, which live there – porgs. There might even be a scene, where Chewbacca notices and "talks" with these creatures, as some sources claim.

Did anyone else notice that this is the same scene, from different angles? left;ep8 & right;ep7

The unidentified burning building has been guessed to be the Academy where Luke started training a new generation of Jedi. Interesting fact about this scene is that at least parts of it was filmed for The Force Awakens, it can only be seen in Rey's vision when she finds Luke's lightsaber, and because the vision seemed to be a mixture of her memories and the memories of Luke Skywalker, it's hard to say whether this part of the vision belongs to him or her. Naturally we think of Luke Skywalker when we see R2D2 & hooded figure with a robotic hand, but doesn't the hooded figure look a bit too small & thin when compared to the droid? Almost as if it was a female figure?

My theory is, that during her training with Luke Skywalker, Rey begins to see into the future, same as Luke did when he was training with Yoda. This specific shot of the hooded figure could actually be an important scene for the final episode in this new trilogy,  with Rey sees herself, staring at a burning building that she might recognize, (a building we will most likely see in the upcoming episode) all alone with the droid. I'm guessing she'll be having the same vision a few times, each time snapping out of it as we see her doing right at the beginning of the new trailer, each time she sees a little more of that vision. Try not to focus on the robotic hand too much, in the image, because remember, people loose hands in the StarWars universe. So I'm guessing this will eventually turn out to be a scene for episode 9, where Rey & R2D2 have survived some horrible chain of events, Luke has died, and maybe even Finn. Perhaps killed by Kylo Ren? And what happens after this scene, is the final battle between Rey & Kylo.

(?????????)  Who knows

Sounds like a reasonable guess.

Aside of TFA connection, there is a minor detail, which they included in the trailer in order to make us puzzled – after the scene with the Temple, we see Phasma and her troops marching. It is noticeable, that she is walking in the hallway of a spaceship, so the two are unrelated.

I find it to be interesting, that the vision could be about the future, rather than past. It can also be a moment, that we actually see Rey with her cybernetics arm (the hands in the vision and the end of TFA do look alike, but something was different there too), protecting the temple that can be destroyed. The other aspect here – is that Yoda says, the future is always in motion, difficult to see. So the destroyed Academy could be just one of the variants, seen in a vision by others, while the real deal would keep the new academy intact.

I also like the new look, but the trailer left some questions about his helmet (rumours have it, that Kylo got a new one, slightly redesigned, almost unnoticeable).

The cape does indeed look like the one of Vader. And I think they wanted to add it back in Episode VII, but they couldn't make such an obvious nod towards Darth Vader.

The costume aside from the cape reminds me of Dooku a bit.

Just quoting what Daisy Ridley had to say about the upcoming episode;

“Me and Mark [Hamill] have been rehearsing a lot, and it’s really amazing. When we went back to Skellig to do the opening of [Episode] VIII, it was so crazy doing the same scene with a different crew of people. He’s amazing to rehearse with, and I’m very excited to be doing the rest of the stuff.” She also noted that, “It’s such a good story. Seriously. Luke is so cool in this one. Really.”

We've already talked about Luke here, specifically how powerful he will be in the Disney trilogy and how important he will be. And just reading the last sentence

gave me goosebumps. Sounds like we'll finally get to see Luke unleashing the force on screen, we may finally get a solid answer for those Youtubers that have been forever debating whether Luke is more powerful than Yoda [Anakin, Windu, etc.] Which reminds me of that rumor from last year;  a few months after the filming had begun on Skellig Island, there was rumor that Mark [Hamill] was seen shooting a scene that involved heavy CGi work, it appeared to be a coastal scene and it involved a ship of massive size [probably a star destroyer]. Rumor to be taken with a grain of salt, but it came from "a reliable source".  What ever that means..

So I'm really really hoping to see that Luke would bring down a star destroyer.

Also, this is something that has be bothering me since the first time I saw the trailer for Episode 8. What on earth is Luke wearing in this scene? Judging from the background, he's probably at this location[spoiler-leaked set photos] I believe he is standing at the entrance of that tree, it's obviously a hollow tree and I think it's the most likely place where we see the old book in the trailer.

I haven't heard about the Star Destroyer, but a different rumour:

While Luke and Rey train in Ach-To, the First Order sends Knights of Ren with Kylo. He eventually arrives on the planet, engaging Luke Skywalker, as well as Rey some time later. Luke fights off most of them with much ease, but not Kylo. Not much is known from this point, but many speculate, that perhaps this is where Luke Skywalker dies and Rey fights Kylo after that.

As for CGI, there was this rumour:

While training with Luke, Rey will explore a lot on the island. She would meet the already mentioned porgs – little creatures, like birds, who live on the island with Luke and perhaps have some connection to the Force. Another scene would involve the dark creature, which lives on the shore, and reminds some sort of Octopus, who attacks Rey at some point.

The tree.

The tree, or whatever it is – appeared as one of the earliest spoiler pictures. It was assumed to be the very first temple of the Jedi, the ancient tree, cut in parts over time (or by Knights of Ren, with some parts of it being CGI), or it is the Bendu, which we already know from the Rebels TV show. In any case it's reasonable to assume, that the books are somewhere in the tree. It was also said, that it would be in flames later in the story.

A bit more on Canto Bight.

The recent spoiler describes Canto Bight a bit more: we know it's a Casino planet with luxury hallways and peculiar architecture. We also know, there would be a chase. So Finn is riding some sort of a horse, as seen previously on the leaked photos. So now there is information, that these creatures are called falthiers, which are a mix of a Taun-Taun and a Horse, which are very fast and are used in race competitions on Canto Bight.

Also one of the scenes would show some sort of exquisite delicacies, eaten on this planet by the noble people, some sort of restaurant. But this is unconfirmed, and in my opinion – not very important :)

Ryan Johnson said, he was the only person, allowed to take photos on the set, and I hope he will release some interesting pictures, well, at least after the premiere.

Sooooo, there are new pictures for The Last jedi, coming from the Vanity Fair. These actually reveal quite a lot in terms if new characters. Look at these at your own risk!

A new male character, which was in discussion a lot.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-24-at-6.20.40-AM.jpg

A new female character, which plays a prominent role in TLJ.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-24-at-6.20.48-AM.jpg

There is a bit of information of the new planet shot in Dubrovnik.

Rose and Finn’s adventure takes them to, among other places, another Johnson innovation: a glittering casino city called Canto Bight, “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief,” the director said.

Something new from Rey.

New aliens. New environment.

Also watch a VIDEO here

I can't say, I am very excited here, because with TFA they also had quite good promos and very good photos by the very same magazine, yet the film showed only some bits of the beauties revealed so equally early before the premiere.
