How to take a screenshot

Recommended Posts

An in-depth guide on the screenshot functions, how to use them and their advantages/disadvantages.

Jedi Academy does not fully support use of the printscreen button, particularly when playing in fullscreen mode. Instead, if you want to take a picture of what you're seeing ingame, you can use the following tutorial.

Commands:
There are two basic commands to take a screenshot: /screenshot and /screenshot_tga. The /screenshot command saves the screenshot in JPG format, the /screenshot_tga command uses TGA instead.

  • /screenshot_tga results in better quality than /screenshot
  • /screenshot_tga freezes the game less than /screenshot
  • /screenshot_tga screenshots take up more space on your harddrive
  • /screenshot_tga screenshots are usually too large to share if you do not know how to optimize them

Screenshots are always saved in the folder of the mod you are running. For example, if you make a screenshot while running Makermod, the screenshot will be in your 'Lucasarts/Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy/GameData/makermod/screenshots' folder. If you do it while not running any mods, the screenshots folder in your base folder will be used.

Usage:
If you merely want to take a basic screenshot, the above commands will work fine. However, if you want to remove the console, more steps need to be taken.

In order to take a high quality screenshot:

  • /bind KEY "cl_noprint 1;screenshot_tga;cl_noprint 0"
  • /cg_draw2d 0
  • Press the key specified above
  • Use /cg_draw2d 1 to restore the HUD

In order to take a lower quality screenshot you can easily share with others:

  • /bind KEY screenshot silent
  • cg_draw2d 0
  • Press the key specified above
  • Use /cg_draw2d 1 to restore the HUD

You can share your screenshot with others using sites such as http://imgur.com, http://tinypic.com, http://imageshack.us and http://photobucket.com. It is important to note that '/screenshot_tga' screenshots are usually too large to share: '/screenshot' or '/screenshot silent' should be used instead, unless you know how to optimize an image.

Useful facts:

  • You can use '/cg_thirdpersoncameradamp 0' to make a screenshot of yourself with relative ease. The default value is 0.3.
  • If you use '/screenshot name', the screenshot will be named 'name.jpg' rather than 'shot0000.jpg'. The same works for '/screenshot_tga name'. If you do this repeatedly, newer screenshots will overwrite older screenshots that have identical names.
  • You can use '/cg_thirdpersonangle' to adjust the rotation of the camera usign values from 0 to 36. This command is cheat protected.
  • You can use '/cg_thirdpersonhorzoffset' to adjust the horizontal camera offset between -32 and 32. This command is cheat protected.
  • You can use '/cg_thirdpersonvertoffset' to adjust the vertical camera offset between -66 and 86. This command is cheat protected.
  • You can use '/cl_noprint 1' to disable console messages on the top left corner of your screen (such as obituaries). The default value is 0.
  • You can use '/cg_draw2d 0' to hide the HUD. The default value is 1.
  • This mod can be very useful for taking screenshots.
